Departure for Port Royal
Cinnamon BunDeparture for Port Royal is the caravan journey that carries Broccoli Bunch away from Rockstack and toward Port Royal. Its decisive significance lies in the way an ordinary departure becomes a threshold: Broccoli leaves behind the inn, shopkeepers, guards, and familiar routines of the outpost, while taking with them a letter, new supplies, a developing capacity for friendship, and an opening into the organized world of exploration. The road is both literal and structural, moving the story from solitary survival and improvised quests toward companions, guild procedures, and larger obligations.
Arrangements at Rockstack
The departure is prepared at the inn, where Juliette tells Broccoli that the traveler is nearly late and introduces Milread as the leader of the party heading to Port Royal. Milread is a harpy, visibly distinct from the grenoil residents Broccoli has encountered: she is tall, feathered, clawed, and birdlike, with uncovered arms and rough, taloned feet. Her easy address to Broccoli as a “lil’ human” establishes an immediate contrast with the guarded or intimidating figures who have previously marked the boundaries of Rockstack. Broccoli’s admission that this is the first time seeing a harpy up close turns the introduction into a small encounter with the wider world beyond the outpost.
Juliette’s parting request gives the journey a personal purpose in addition to its transportation. She produces a sealed letter from inside her apron and explains that an inn near Port Royal’s east gate is owned by Julien, her husband. Broccoli is to deliver the letter, and Julien has been asked to provide a room for the night. The errand binds the road to the domestic network of the inn: Broccoli is not simply leaving with strangers but carrying Juliette’s trust to another household. Broccoli accepts the letter, stores it in the backpack, embraces Juliette, thanks her for everything, and expresses hope that they will meet again. The farewell therefore closes the Rockstack episode through affection rather than through a formal command.
Milread also reassures Broccoli that the party will offer opportunities for companionship. When Broccoli asks whether many people are traveling, Milread responds that there will be plenty of time to make friends, calling Broccoli a “little chick.” The phrase is lightly teasing, but it also anticipates the journey’s social function. Broccoli has already begun to move from isolated action toward connection, and the departure places that movement in a group setting.
The Party and Its Road
The travelers settle the fare before leaving. Milread charges one sil for the trip, largely to keep Missy fed. Missy is the ordinary horse attached to a small one-horse wagon, whose presence reduces the amount of walking required on a journey lasting several days. The other two grenoil travelers find coins to pay, and Broccoli does the same. The low cost makes the trip accessible while also emphasizing its modest, practical character: this is not a grand expedition with ceremonial preparations, but a working route maintained by people who need to get from one place to another.
Milread explains that she is a courier whose regular circuit runs from Port Royal to the outpost, then to Fort Tempete and Deepmarsh, before returning. A full round trip takes about two weeks, and she describes the route simply as her living. Her occupation gives the departure a broader geographical frame. Port Royal is not an isolated destination reached once by chance; it belongs to a recurring network of roads and settlements maintained through labor, repetition, and reliable transport. Milread’s wings and talons are not merely visual markers of species. They are incorporated into the practical work of travel when she gestures toward her dislike of wearing gloves and later hands the reins to Broccoli.
Broccoli takes the reins despite having no previous experience driving a wagon, claiming only that horses are likable. The attempt is enthusiastic rather than competent: Broccoli shouts and whips the leather cords, and eventually ends up sitting in the back with the male grenoil traveler. The journey thus begins with a comic reversal of expectations. Broccoli is willing to take responsibility, but the result is an uncomfortable seat above the axle of the two-wheeled wagon, where every uneven section of ground makes the body bounce. Broccoli responds by spreading blankets across the floor as padding; the grenoil man, after an indignant harrumph, does the same with a thick quilt. Their shared improvisation turns discomfort into the first small accommodation of traveling together.
At the gate, Broccoli waves to the two guards who had seemed bored on the previous day. One guard waves back. Then the wagon passes beyond the outpost and the road begins. The brief exchange matters because it places departure between recognition and uncertainty: Broccoli is known enough to receive a farewell, but the destination lies outside the guards’ routine and outside the settled limits of Rockstack.
From Solitary Quests to a Wider System
The road follows a series of earlier transitions in Broccoli’s development. At the beginning of the adventure, an unseen quest system announces that a great evil has rooted itself in the world and asks whether Broccoli will accept the quest. The offer appears in a translucent floating box with choices to accept or refuse, and Broccoli initially treats it as unreal. Later, a mundane act of clearing a blocked room unlocks the Cleaning skill because it is a Special Action aligned with Broccoli’s class. The reward transforms an ordinary preference into a recognized capability.
That system continues to translate action into advancement. Broccoli receives bonus experience after three Sentinel Ghosts of Threewells give up the ghost, and the Cinnamon Bun class reaches level one. The Evil Root is later found but proves too powerful to destroy directly; the quest instead instructs Broccoli to break the Core and let the root starve. Completion is accompanied by the message that the world thanks Broccoli for the sacrifice, even as Broccoli’s exhausted, adrenaline-filled laughter undercuts the solemnity of the notification. After leaving the party, repeated social action unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. The Port Royal departure therefore occurs after a chain in which cleaning, combat, sacrifice, and companionship have all been converted into formal progress.
This progression gives the journey a double meaning. Broccoli is traveling through a physical landscape, but also through a rule-governed system that interprets behavior and assigns consequences. The road to Port Royal extends the same logic into institutions. Guards identify access points, a courier maintains a route, an innkeeper provides a personal connection, and the Exploration Guild later receives Broccoli through written procedures. The world is encountered not as empty wilderness but as a mesh of local services and larger organizations.
Arrival Toward the Exploration Guild
The journey’s destination is connected directly to Broccoli’s eventual search for the Exploration Guild headquarters. In Port Royal, Broccoli asks attentive grenoil city guards for directions to the guild. The guards’ presence shows that entry into the city’s institutional geography requires navigation as well as movement. Broccoli is not merely looking for lodging or a market; the departure has carried them toward an organization capable of giving the adventure a formal structure.
At the guild, a document is placed before Broccoli with a question about whether they know how to write their name. Broccoli reads the entire document instead, revealing an ability that the official appears not to have expected. The contract makes Broccoli a temporary member for one month or until certain requirements are fulfilled. It lists protections, discounts at other guilds, reduced travel costs, and possible reimbursement for food and special equipment. The details show how the road’s informal arrangements lead into a system of regulated mobility. A one-sil wagon fare and a sealed inn letter belong to personal exchange; guild membership turns travel into an institutional privilege with terms, protections, and obligations.
The Exploration Guild also frames Broccoli’s future as a question of usefulness. After the first expedition, Broccoli is invited to return so that a team might be found better suited to their skills. Yet the apparent welcome is unstable. Later, a woman orders Gabriel to provide Broccoli with a coin purse and standard mission pay before showing them out, then declares that Broccoli is a liability who should never have been allowed to join. The journey toward Port Royal thus leads not to uncomplicated acceptance but to a confrontation with the limits imposed by institutions. Broccoli’s departure opens the door to the guild while the subsequent judgment threatens to close it.
Significance of the Departure
Departure for Port Royal is an event of movement, but its deeper action is reclassification. Broccoli leaves Rockstack as a solitary adventurer who has accumulated tools, quests, skills, and fragile friendships. The sealed letter makes Broccoli a trusted messenger; the wagon makes Broccoli a temporary member of a traveling party; Milread’s route places the destination within a working regional network; and the road itself leads toward an organization that can define Broccoli’s role in future expeditions.
The event also preserves the story’s balance between comedy and risk. Driving the wagon begins with overconfident enthusiasm and ends with an uncomfortable position over the axle. A routine fare supports a multi-day journey. A farewell hug carries the possibility of reunion but cannot guarantee it. A guild contract offers protections and discounts, yet later judgment reduces Broccoli to a liability. The departure is therefore neither a triumphant arrival nor a simple escape. It is a threshold whose promise depends on Broccoli’s ability to convert improvisation into belonging while continuing to move through systems that may reward, misunderstand, or reject them.
