Donat
Cinnamon BunDonat is a young Grenoil adventurer whose nervous chatter turns a dangerous meeting in the Darkwoods into Broccoli Bunch’s first genuine encounter with a travelling party. He is presented as a nervous Grenoil Fencer of level 9, but his importance lies less in martial authority than in his role as an eager, imperfect intermediary: he discovers Broccoli, announces the human’s presence to the expedition, explains the local monsters, and helps create the brief companionship that later unlocks Broccoli’s Friendmaking skill.
Identity and Introduction
Donat first reaches Broccoli through his voice. While Broccoli is travelling alone, Donat complains that burrs have become stuck to his clothing and calls them “ball zings,” prompting his companion to correct him. The exchange establishes him as distinctly male, young-sounding, and not especially polished, but also makes him immediately recognizable as curious and approachable rather than remote or threatening.
His physical appearance confirms that he is not human. Donat belongs to the Grenoil people, whose smooth greenish skin, thick legs, and squat proportions are suited to a body unlike Broccoli’s. His clothing is made for trekking through the woods, and his equipment identifies him as an adventurer rather than a civilian traveller. The narrative labels him a nervous Grenoil Fencer, level 9, placing him below the older ranger in apparent experience while still giving him a defined combat role within the party.
Role in the Grenoil Expedition
Donat becomes the first member of the expedition to openly claim Broccoli as a discovery. After finding the human on the road, he races ahead and gestures back toward Broccoli while calling to Emeric and Arianne that they have found a human. This announcement brings the entire group together, transforming Broccoli’s isolated movement through the Darkwoods into a social encounter with a functioning adventuring party.
His excitement is balanced by the party’s suspicion. The samurai criticizes Donat’s presence as a privilege and suggests that it would not be too late to find someone else to carry a burden through a dungeon. The remark implies that Donat is inexperienced or regarded as a liability. The ranger accepts responsibility for bringing Broccoli to camp, while the samurai orders the human to be tied up and searched. Donat therefore occupies an uncertain position: he is enthusiastic enough to initiate contact, but not senior enough to control how that contact proceeds.
Donat’s behavior also helps define the expedition’s internal hierarchy. He is expected to know useful information, yet Arianne has to prompt him to provide it. When she asks him to explain sombrals, he jumps, looks around, and rubs at his face before beginning. His response describes sombrals as second-tier monsters resembling wolves made of shadows: they are large, stealthy, do not need sleep, and prey on fresh Grenoil meat. The lesson is functional, but Donat’s hesitation shows that knowledge and confidence do not arrive together for him.
Relationship with Broccoli Bunch
Donat’s connection with Broccoli begins in awkwardness and quickly develops into informal familiarity. He speaks about Broccoli’s chest often enough for Broccoli to tease him about it directly. The exchange gives their relationship a comic, unguarded quality, while also showing that Donat’s curiosity can be tactless. Broccoli does not respond by withdrawing; instead, the teasing becomes part of the process by which the stranger is absorbed into the camp’s conversation.
Donat is also the expedition member most visibly invested in presenting Broccoli to the others. His excited announcement is not merely logistical. It gives Broccoli a place in the group’s attention and makes the human encounter a shared event rather than a private discovery. Even when the samurai objects to Broccoli’s presence, Donat remains the figure through whom the meeting enters the expedition’s collective life.
The relationship is consequently asymmetrical but meaningful. Donat lacks the authority to guarantee Broccoli’s safety or acceptance, yet his initiative opens the door to both. He acts as a social threshold figure: nervous, talkative, and not fully secure within his own party, but willing to draw an unknown traveller into its circle.
Departure and Lasting Consequence
The party’s morning departure gives Donat a quieter role. While the others wake, eat, dismantle tents, and prepare their equipment, Donat and Pierre wait secretly by the roadside. The detail preserves Donat’s mischievous or conspiratorial energy even after the first meeting has ended. He is not reduced to the nervous fighter introduced on the road; he remains active in the group’s small, informal movements.
When the expedition leaves, Donat walks and hops away with Pierre while Leonard studies a map and Valerie tends to Arianne. Broccoli says goodbye to Emeric and waves to the others, including Donat, then imagines that the groups might meet again. The separation is temporary in emotional terms but decisive in Broccoli’s development: the encounter has shown that adventuring can mean belonging to a group, not merely surviving alone.
Immediately after setting out, Broccoli receives a system reward for repeating a Special Action often enough: the general skill Friendmaking. Donat’s introduction of Broccoli to the Grenoil expedition is part of the social experience behind that reward. The system therefore converts an ordinary act of meeting, talking, and parting into measurable progression. Donat’s contribution is not a victory in combat or a completed quest, but the creation of a relationship that changes Broccoli’s available capabilities.
Narrative Function and Significance
Donat embodies the book’s recurring contrast between game-like classification and untidy living behavior. His status is precise—a level-9 Grenoil Fencer—yet his conduct is full of uncertainty, incorrect vocabulary, nervous gestures, and dependence on correction. The label promises a stable role; the scene supplies a young adventurer still learning how to inhabit it.
His introduction also softens the Darkwoods without making it safe. The setting contains hostile monsters such as sombrals, but it is also a place where travellers camp beside the road, cook stew in a hanging cauldron, skin fresh meat, and argue over the right name for burrs. Donat’s voice carries this mixture of danger and ordinary comedy into Broccoli’s journey.
Most importantly, Donat helps turn Broccoli’s adventure from a solitary response to the world’s quest into a pattern of mutual recognition. The world’s menus reward cleaning, killing, completing quests, and finally making friends; Donat belongs to the last of these changes. His nervous welcome does not solve Broccoli’s larger problems, but it demonstrates that progress can be social, temporary, and still transformative.
