Dunwich Abomination Chase
Cinnamon BunThe Dunwich Abomination Chase is a sustained pursuit and combat encounter in which Broccoli Bunch is forced to abandon the apparently simple task of gathering flowers and survive a pack of Dunwich Abominations. Its decisive turn comes when one creature’s human-sounding screech shakes Broccoli’s mind, briefly replacing fear with the delusion that the monster is harmless and hungry. Cleaning magic restores Broccoli’s judgment, after which flight, a dangerous leap from a cliff, and an alliance with a dryad convert the chase into a battle. The sequence ends with the elimination of five opponents and Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class reaching level 5.
Causes and Initial Threat
The encounter begins when a hungry Dunwich Abomination, level 8, notices Broccoli. Its strangely dog-like head turns toward the fleeing adventurer, and its skin shifts to the colour of the surrounding stones, making it nearly invisible at a distance until its movement gives it away. The camouflage makes the monster threatening before the fight properly begins: the danger is first perceived as something difficult to see, then as something already moving closer.
The abomination’s scream intensifies that danger beyond ordinary physical pursuit. Although the sound is recognizably human, it is identified as the screech of a creature of madness, and Broccoli’s mind is shaken. Under its influence, Broccoli forgets the reason for running and begins to reinterpret the monster as a creature that might simply need feeding. Cleaning magic then breaks through the mental disturbance in fits and starts, restoring enough clarity for Broccoli to understand that the abomination is still approaching and that escape remains necessary.
The Cliffside Escape
Broccoli runs at full effort while additional abominations obstruct the route. Rocks that initially seem useful as obstacles begin to wiggle and move toward the fleeing figure, revealing that the apparent landscape is part of the threat. A leap carries Broccoli over the line of abominations, but the monsters remain close behind. With the cliffs ahead and the normal path too slow, Broccoli chooses the drop rather than risk being caught by the tentacled creatures.
The leap is not a controlled descent. Broccoli shoots over the cliff edge, loses stamina while trying to gain distance, and crashes into a large pine tree. The impact is painful but survivable because the tree bends and sways back into place. Behind Broccoli, a screech is followed by a sickening splat, and the system confirms that a level 7 Dunwich Abomination has died from the fall. The accidental kill earns bonus experience because the monster was above Broccoli’s level, turning an improvised escape into an unexpected combat success.
The escape is only temporary. Six abominations stand in a row at the top of the hill, glaring down at Broccoli, then sprout large, deformed wings. They land in the woods just as Broccoli reaches the ground, renewing the chase. The forest slows Broccoli with fallen trees and thick brush, while the abominations compensate for their lesser speed by forcing through the vegetation without breaking stride. The pursuit finally drives Broccoli face-first into an angry tree, where the immediate danger becomes an encounter with a dryad rather than a clean getaway.
The Dryad’s Intervention
The collision brings Broccoli into the presence of an angry dryad. Broccoli attempts to defuse the encounter by proposing lunch and offering to pay as an apology, but the gesture fails to improve the dryad’s mood. The interruption becomes urgent when the abominations burst through the bushes behind Broccoli, their tentacles lashing forward. Rather than flee and leave the dryad to face six attackers alone, Broccoli jumps to the lower branches of a nearby tree and grips the spade close to the chest, choosing to remain involved despite the danger.
The dryad answers the threat with overwhelming physical force. One hand catches the leading abomination’s whipping tentacles and yanks the creature closer; the other drives a fist into its body up to the wrist. Thorny vines then erupt from beneath the monster’s skin and coil around it, mulching the already grotesque creature with dagger-sized thorns. The system credits the dryad’s attack with killing a level 8 Dunwich Abomination, while Broccoli receives reduced experience because the dryad was the primary combatant. The scene therefore shifts the encounter from solitary survival to reluctant cooperation: Broccoli is not strong enough to defeat the pack alone, but still refuses to treat the dryad’s danger as someone else’s problem.
Coordinated Counterattack
Broccoli’s refusal to remain a passive observer changes the balance of the fight. When one abomination clamps its teeth around the dryad’s leg, Broccoli attacks the creature from behind, striking its head with the spade before chopping repeatedly at the tentacle holding the dryad. The improvised weapon eventually severs the limb with a wet squelch, freeing Broccoli to climb into the trees. This intervention is limited but strategically important: it does not replace the dryad’s strength, yet it creates the distraction needed for the dryad to continue fighting without being pinned down.
The maneuver develops into a coordinated sequence rather than a series of isolated blows. The two abominations Broccoli has drawn away follow through the trees while Broccoli circles around the dryad, keeping the creatures occupied until the dryad finishes another opponent. Once that opening appears, the dryad turns on the remaining monsters and crashes into them with the force of a falling tree. The battle ends quickly after that charge. The system records the team’s elimination of five opponents: three level 7 Dunwich Abominations, one level 8 creature, and one level 9 creature. Broccoli’s reduced reward reflects the dryad’s role as the primary combatant, but the encounter still produces a substantial advancement: the Cinnamon Bun class reaches level 5, granting 10 additional Mana and 10 additional Magic.
Consequences and Narrative Significance
The chase ends as more than an escape from a hostile pack. Broccoli Bunch’s survival depends on repeatedly converting vulnerability into movement: Cleaning magic counters the abomination’s attack on the mind, the cliff becomes an accidental weapon, and the forest collision creates the conditions for an alliance with the dryad. None of these reversals makes Broccoli the encounter’s dominant fighter. The dryad kills the most dangerous creatures, and the system explicitly reduces Broccoli’s reward because the dryad is the primary combatant. Yet Broccoli’s contribution is decisive in a different register. Broccoli remains present when retreat would be easier, frees the dryad by severing the tentacle gripping the dryad’s leg, and uses the trees to draw two opponents away long enough for the stronger ally to finish the others. The final team tally—three level 7 Dunwich Abominations, one level 8, and one level 9—therefore records cooperation as much as force.
The encounter also turns grotesque danger into measurable progression. The level 7 abomination killed by the fall grants bonus experience, as does the later destruction of monsters above Broccoli’s level, while the reduced share from the dryad’s kills preserves the distinction between assistance and primary combat. After the battle, Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class reaches level 5, adding 10 Mana and 10 Magic. That advancement gives the pursuit a lasting consequence beyond immediate survival: an apparently failed flower-gathering excursion instead becomes a threshold in Broccoli’s development, where Cleaning magic, an improvised spade, mobility, and an unexpected alliance function together as a viable adventuring method.
