Emeric

Cinnamon Bun

Emeric is the Sword-Dancer who turns Broccoli Bunch’s first encounter with the frog-people expedition from a threatening unknown into an act of hospitality. As the party’s approachable spokesman, he identifies its members, welcomes Broccoli to the campfire, offers practical help, and points toward Rockstack and the Exploration Guild. His importance lies less in a long individual arc than in the social bridge he creates: through Emeric, Broccoli moves from solitary survival toward friendship, information exchange, and the possibility of belonging to a larger adventuring community.

Identity and Introduction

Emeric appears when Donat races ahead of the expedition and announces that the group has found a human. The party has gathered beside the road around a campfire and a hanging cauldron, with tents being raised nearby and stew cooking over the flames. Broccoli initially reads the frog-people as an unfamiliar but evidently organized culture: their clothing is professionally made for non-human bodies, their equipment is functional, and their camp suggests a substantial community beyond the woods. Emeric is therefore introduced not merely as an individual frog-person but as part of a society that Broccoli has not previously encountered. Emeric’s inspection identifies him as a relaxed Sword-Dancer. That class immediately distinguishes him from the party’s other specialists and gives his genial manner a useful counterpoint: he possesses a combat-oriented profession, yet his first decisive action toward Broccoli is not aggression. He gestures toward a nearby log and invites the stranger to sit by the fire, establishing the expedition’s willingness to treat Broccoli as a guest so long as no harm is done.

Hospitality and Social Function

Emeric’s welcome is the first substantial sign that Broccoli’s isolation may be ending. He recognizes that the traveler has been alone for a long time, listens to the introduction of the Cinnamon Bun class, and responds with curiosity rather than ridicule. He introduces himself by name and identifies Arianne as the wizard, Pierre as the ranger and scout, Valerie as the young woman across the fire, Donat as the companion at the tents, and Leonard Chand’nuit as the grumpy member of the group. This naming gesture gives Broccoli a map of the party’s social structure at the same moment that the physical map of the surrounding world remains incomplete. Emeric’s manner also mediates between Broccoli and the more suspicious Leonard Chand’nuit. Leonard warns that he will watch the human and will not permit interference with the expedition’s business, whereas Emeric treats Broccoli as a possible friend before any formal trust has been established. The contrast makes Emeric the party’s social threshold rather than its guard: he does not erase the group’s caution, but he prevents caution from becoming immediate exclusion.

Exploration Guild and Future Direction

Emeric explains that he, Arianne, Pierre, and, most recently, Valerie belong to the same Exploration Guild team. Leonard Chand’nuit is a senior member who has joined the expedition because its destination is more dangerous than their ordinary work, while Donat has come along because the party may encounter a dungeon and he is close to achieving class evolution. These details show Emeric functioning as an interpreter of the expedition’s professional world. Through him, Broccoli learns that the group’s travel is not random wandering: it is organized exploration undertaken by people with distinct roles, guild affiliations, and advancement goals. When Broccoli admits to being lost, Emeric offers a concrete route forward. He says that Broccoli may stay with the party for the night and that, on the following day, they will point the way to Rockstack, a small outpost run by several guilds. He links Broccoli’s apparent cleverness with the possibility of finding work and perhaps one day joining the Exploration Guild. The offer is modest, but its consequence is large. Emeric gives Broccoli not only directions but an institutional horizon: survival in the woods can lead toward employment, membership, and a recognized place in the wider world. Emeric’s openness extends to information. When Leonard asks what Broccoli knows, Broccoli retrieves the map of Threewells and uses it as a possible bargaining resource, perhaps for food. The exchange places Emeric’s expedition in contact with Broccoli’s prior experience and makes the isolated traveler useful to people who possess greater knowledge of the road ahead. Broccoli’s map is no longer only a record of personal survival; in the company of Emeric and the explorers, it becomes evidence that can connect separate journeys.

Farewell and Narrative Significance

The party’s departure gives Emeric’s brief relationship with Broccoli a clear emotional shape. After the group wakes, with Arianne sluggishly accepting a bowl, Valerie hurriedly dismantling the tents, and Leonard absorbed in a map, Emeric reaches out a webbed hand and says goodbye. Broccoli shakes it and waves to the others as the expedition moves away. The farewell is painful because the welcome has made the separation matter: Broccoli swallows hard, smiles, and continues onward while hoping that the paths may cross again and that membership in the same group might someday be possible. Immediately after leaving, Broccoli unlocks the general skill Friendmaking for repeating a Special Action often enough. The system notification gives mechanical form to what Emeric’s encounter has accomplished socially. Friendship is not treated as decorative sentiment; it becomes a learned capacity and a source of progression. Emeric’s campfire thus marks a turning point in Broccoli’s movement from isolation toward a network of relationships. Emeric remains significant even when later guild institutions become suspicious and exclusionary. The Exploration Guild’s later crisis involves Rainnewt’s disappearance, an improper admission, attempts to have Amaryllis Albatross kidnapped, and a proposal to remove Broccoli as a liability. Against that bureaucratic hostility, Emeric’s earlier welcome establishes another model of membership: one grounded in shared fire, practical guidance, mutual curiosity, and the recognition that an outsider may become an ally. His role is consequently foundational rather than extensive. Emeric is the first guild-connected explorer to make the world feel inhabitable for Broccoli, and the possibility of belonging that he articulates continues to animate Broccoli’s later choices.
