Exploration Guild badge

Cinnamon Bun

The Exploration Guild badge is both a practical credential and a compact emblem of Broccoli Bunch’s uncertain entry into organized adventuring. Given to her after an unusual recruitment interview, it identifies her as a temporary member, signals access to guild-linked privileges, and visually places her within a system that ranks, equips, and evaluates explorers. Its importance lies in the contrast between the badge’s neat promise of belonging and the later institutional decision to treat Broccoli as a liability.

Form and Insignia

The badge takes the form of a small compass rose pin made of simple steel with porcelain embossing. Its design is a deep-blue compass rose crossed by a tiny brown bandoleer, making it more than an undecorated piece of metal: the compass evokes travel, orientation, and mapping, while the bandoleer recalls the guild’s customary equipment and the practical culture of expedition work. The object is modest, but its visual language condenses the guild’s function into a wearable sign.

Mister Rainnewt explains that most guild members wear a bandoleer as a tradition, whereas pins and medals attached to a member’s clothing usually indicate rank and accomplishments. Because Broccoli already has suitable equipment, the badge allows her to participate in that symbolic system without being issued the customary bandoleer. The distinction matters: the pin is not merely a token of admission but part of a visible hierarchy through which the guild makes membership, experience, and achievement legible.

Admission and Institutional Use

The badge is presented after Broccoli signs the temporary membership contract. The contract defines her status for one month or until she fulfills specified requirements, grants protections to guild members, and offers discounts through certain other guilds, reduced travel costs, and possible reimbursement for food and special equipment. Her admission fee can be paid during a grace period, and she retains the option to leave if the guild proves unsuitable or if she decides not to continue after her first mission.

Mister Rainnewt hands her the badge together with instructions about the stores that provide discounts. He expects Broccoli to use the marked businesses intelligently, so the pin functions as an access credential within a broader network rather than as an isolated ornament. Its presence on her clothing can connect her to guild pricing, travel arrangements, expedition preparation, and the contractual protections attached to temporary membership.

The badge also accompanies a concrete assignment. Broccoli is told to report to the lobby two hours before noon with equipment for a week-long voyage, and she is warned to pack for a swampy region. The expedition documents identify the mission as Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC from the Port-Royal Branch, whose purpose is to explore, scout, and map the area around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to the meeting point. The pin therefore marks the transition from casual adventuring to formally organized fieldwork.

Broccoli’s Relationship to the Badge

Broccoli pins the badge directly over her heart. The gesture gives the institutional object a personal placement: the guild’s emblem rests where a sentimental or intimate symbol might be worn, while Orange’s sleeping head is beside it and receives a rub from Broccoli’s hand. The scene joins public affiliation and private attachment, placing the badge within the same small field of attention as her spirit companion.

She is pleased by the object’s appearance and treats the act of receiving it as a meaningful welcome. Her conversation with Booksie shows that the badge has already changed how she presents herself: when she visits the shop for reading material before the airship journey, she touches the pin while explaining that she needs books on magic and easy spells suited to her cleaning-type mana. The badge thus becomes part of her self-description as an explorer, even while her interests remain unusual and her magical ability is associated with Cleaning rather than a conventional combat specialty.

That identity is reinforced by the guild’s system of recognition. Elsewhere, the world’s interface rewards Broccoli for actions that fit her class: cleaning unlocks the Cleaning skill, defeating three Sentinel Ghosts grants bonus experience, and repeated social action unlocks Friendmaking. The badge belongs to the same larger pattern of visible or procedural confirmation. Where the system announces progress through notifications, the guild records membership and accomplishment through pins, medals, contracts, and expedition summaries.

Limits of the Promise

The badge’s promise of belonging is never fully secure. Broccoli receives it through Mister Rainnewt’s handshake and an explicit welcome to the Exploration Guild, but her admission is described as abnormal from the beginning. Rainnewt recognizes that her unusual entrance may create opportunities, yet the institution’s later response reveals how conditional that welcome is.

When Broccoli remains at the guild after her expedition-related dealings, a woman orders Gabriel to give her a coin-purse containing standard mission pay and show her out. Broccoli initially wonders whether the problem is her unpaid admission fee, since Rainnewt had said payment could wait until her return. The woman rejects that explanation and states that Broccoli is being expelled because she is a liability and should never have been allowed to join. The badge consequently becomes an ironic object: it certifies a membership that the guild can revoke, and it preserves the memory of Rainnewt’s welcome even as another authority denies her right to belong.

Narrative Significance

As a sign, the Exploration Guild badge expresses the difference between recognition and acceptance. Its compass rose promises direction and a place within an organized route, while the tiny bandoleer invokes a tradition Broccoli has entered without fully possessing. The object gives her a legitimate-looking surface at precisely the moment when her status remains provisional, her fee is deferred, and her suitability is under examination.

The badge also brings distant institutions into ordinary life. A traveler can approach Grenoil guards, seek directions to the Exploration Guild headquarters, deal with an alchemist such as Dylan, and prepare for a formal expedition through documents and guild-linked shops. The pin is the portable point at which those systems meet Broccoli’s body. It turns an otherwise isolated adventurer into a recognizable participant in a network of travel, commerce, mapping, and risk.

Its final significance is therefore double. The badge is evidence that Broccoli has crossed a threshold into expeditionary society, but it is not proof that society will protect her indefinitely. Worn over her heart, it carries both the warmth of a welcome and the cold authority of an institution capable of declaring that the wearer is a liability.
