Fort Frogger

Cinnamon Bun

Fort Frogger is a decommissioned frontier fort whose ruined military architecture conceals an active undead stronghold. First approached as a low-risk mapping assignment, it becomes the decisive refuge from which Gunther mobilizes a rescue force after Amaryllis is abducted. Its importance lies in this transformation: Fort Frogger is simultaneously a relic of failed expansion, a dangerous contested space, and the place where an isolated adventurer gains organized support.

Definition and Setting

Fort Frogger was built when its makers expected war with the Trentans, then decommissioned and left to decay. Gabriel assigns Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis to inspect it, map the surrounding roads, and return to their meeting point. The official Exploration Guild summary identifies the assignment as Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC from the Port-Royal Branch, with an estimated duration of approximately three days and a difficulty rated low to negligible. The contrast between that administrative description and what the expedition finds becomes one of the location’s defining ironies.

From a nearby hill, Amaryllis initially judges the fort to be close, suggesting that the map obtained from the Golden Nest Bank has an inaccurate scale. The fort itself is a large, roughly square building with a single short tower and dull grey walls. Even at a distance, most of the walls appear cracked and broken. Reaching it requires crossing several kilometres of swampland, making the supposedly simple survey a physically demanding approach through difficult terrain.

The fort occupies a broad frontier landscape rather than an isolated pocket of wilderness. From the plateau, the Darkwoods extend like a sea of trees, marshes lie to the east, mountains stretch northward, and a possible huge lake is visible far to the south. Fort Frogger therefore commands a visual and strategic threshold between forest, marsh, mountain, and settled routes. Its ruined condition does not erase its significance; instead, the broken installation exposes the layered history of the borderlands.

Ruined Fortress and Undead Garrison

When Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis finally reach the fort, they approach cautiously, keeping low and moving among patches of dead trees while avoiding patrols. They encounter a patrol of three Grenoil skeletons before reaching a hill overlooking the entrance. The large wooden doors stand open, one having been torn completely free from its massive metal hinges. The courtyard is crowded with undead, primarily Grenoil skeletons, alongside creatures resembling horses with human upper bodies.

Two larger skeletons wait at the gate in plate armour, each carrying a sword roughly the size of Broccoli Bunch. The identification of each as a Skeleton Knight, with its level unreadable, marks the entrance as more than a neglected historical site. The fort retains the visual language of a military installation—gate, courtyard, armour, patrols, and guarded access—but its current defenders are undead rather than a conventional army. The result is a military space whose original purpose has been preserved in form while its political ownership and living personnel have vanished.

The apparent contradiction between the Guild’s negligible difficulty rating and the fort’s armed undead population also establishes the limits of institutional knowledge. The mission paperwork treats Fort Frogger as a routine cartographic objective, while direct observation reveals a fortified enclosure capable of concealing substantial hostile forces. The location thus exposes the danger of reducing a changing frontier to a stable map entry.

Gunther’s Refuge and Military Power

After the expedition is attacked at a bridge and Amaryllis is taken, Broccoli Bunch abandons the slower return and races back to Fort Frogger. What required two hours of walking with Amaryllis takes only twenty minutes during the desperate sprint. Broccoli collapses at the entrance, his legs weakened and inflamed by repeated jumping, but the Skeleton Knights do not react to his arrival. He enters carrying only his spear and spade after discarding his backpack, then pounds on the door and calls for Gunther’s help.

Gunther opens the door with Throat Ripper at his side. His initial irritation changes when he sees Broccoli’s condition, and he invites him inside before hearing that Amaryllis was abducted at the bridge. Fort Frogger consequently changes from the destination of an expedition to a sanctuary and command post. Its gates and garrison, previously signs of danger, now provide access to the resources Broccoli needs most urgently.

Gunther refuses to send Broccoli alone. He promises to gather his swiftest skeletons, reasoning that six adversaries who have reached or passed the first rank would require a much larger number of skeletons to contain. He orders Throat Ripper and several butler skeletons to retrieve the dog’s armour, then selects six cervid skeletons and sends them to equip themselves for battle. Behind the departing party, more than a dozen cervid skeletons form a rough line with spears and shields. The scene reveals the scale of Gunther’s authority within what Broccoli had regarded as a small fort: the ruined installation houses a disciplined force capable of rapid mobilization.

Throat Ripper’s preparation makes the fort’s defensive capacity especially concrete. The previously silly-looking bone dog is transformed by thick padded armour, crocodile-like scaly hide, a helmet that leaves only the glow of his eyes visible, and bony spikes along his sides, back, and haunches. From Fort Frogger, he carries Broccoli rapidly toward the bridge, where the abandoned backpack marks the point at which Amaryllis was taken. The fort’s military resources therefore operate not merely as background world-building but as the practical means of converting panic into pursuit.

Border History and Political Memory

Gunther explains that the United Republic of the Trenten Flats is the continent’s largest nation and an aggressively expansionist neighbour. Decades earlier, it invaded Deepmarsh, although the outcome cannot be reduced to a simple claim that Deepmarsh defeated the invasion. The Trentan force outnumbered anything Deepmarsh could field by three to one, but its inexperienced general, inadequate scouting, and inexperienced army were weakened by the swamps, untreated water, and insects before resistance could determine the result.

Gunther still finds bodies from that invasion. His remark gives Fort Frogger’s dereliction a material historical residue: the fort was built in anticipation of a war shaped by expansionist pressure, and the surrounding marsh continues to hold the remains of that conflict. The building is not simply old. Its cracks and abandonment are set against a frontier where military preparation, failed invasion, ethnic suspicion, and environmental attrition remain active forces.

This history also explains the urgency of Gunther’s warning. He tells Broccoli to rescue Amaryllis and return to the fort, or, if necessary, flee toward Green Hold, because cervids and others from the Trenten Flats are unwelcome there. Fort Frogger is therefore both a shelter and a political boundary. Its hospitality is selective, its defensive force reflects inherited conflict, and its location makes it a staging ground in tensions that precede the current expedition.

Role in the Rescue and Return

The rescue party follows Throat Ripper from Fort Frogger to the bridge and then beyond it, using his tracking ability to leave the road. The fort remains the fixed point behind the operation: Gunther’s orders, the skeleton escort, and the instruction to bring Amaryllis back establish a route outward and a destination for return. When Broccoli finally reaches the remaining cervid captors, Amaryllis has been set aside while a lancer holds a spear close to her neck. The threat hanging over that confrontation gives retrospective weight to Fort Frogger’s rapid mobilization.

After the crisis, Broccoli and Amaryllis consider whether returning to Green Hold is wise, then decide to go back toward the fort. The next chapter is titled “The Return,” and Amaryllis, exhausted after the ordeal, says that she could use some of Broccoli’s tea. The movement back toward safety is therefore not a triumphant restoration of the old expedition. It is a return to the place that offered protection, armed assistance, and a temporary domestic calm after the border’s violence.

Fort Frogger’s narrative function rests on these reversals. A routine Guild survey reveals an undead fortress; a former military outpost becomes Gunther’s refuge; and a neglected ruin becomes the launch point for a rescue mission. Its history of anticipated war and lingering corpses connects the immediate abduction to the larger politics of the Trenten Flats and Deepmarsh. The fort stands as a frontier structure whose decay does not signify emptiness, but accumulated conflict still capable of organizing the lives of everyone who enters its shadow.
