Gabriel
Cinnamon BunGabriel is a Grenoil adventurer whose first impression is deliberately disreputable: he carries a bandoleer, rope, concealed knife, and two flasks, smells faintly of alcohol, and greets Broccoli Bunch with mockery rather than ceremony. Yet beneath the slovenly presentation lies a capable field operative who can assess people, cast lifesaving magic, organize an expedition, and respond quickly when an apparently local mission becomes a political threat. His significance comes from that contrast. Gabriel is not a polished guardian or an ideal guild professional, but he repeatedly proves more useful than his manners suggest.
Identity and Introduction
Gabriel appears at the Port Royal branch of the Exploration Guild as an adventurer appointed to accompany Amaryllis and Broccoli Bunch. Mister Rainnewt introduces Broccoli as Amaryllis’s expedition partner and explicitly tells Gabriel to take care of both of them, while acknowledging that Broccoli already has some experience. Gabriel’s equipment marks him as someone accustomed to travel and danger: a bandoleer crosses one shoulder, a coil of rope rests over the other, his clothing is simple but durable and full of pockets, and a cloak conceals a knife and two flasks at his waist.
His social presentation is much rougher than his equipment. He pulls one flask from his belt before Mister Rainnewt’s disapproving interruption, laughs at Broccoli’s circumstances, and asks what she uses if she cannot use a spear. When she identifies her Makeshift Weapon Proficiency, he calls the skill dangerous because it is difficult to predict. He introduces himself simply as Gabriel, shakes her hand with a grin, and frames the coming expedition as a week of babysitting, hardship, long nights, and more babysitting. The joking language establishes his habitual defensiveness: he treats responsibility as an irritating assignment even while accepting it.
Expedition Leadership and Competence
Gabriel’s supervision is compromised by his own indifference. He admits that he did not read the files supplied to him, relying instead on Inspect to tell him what he needed to know. That shortcut immediately produces comic ignorance when the skill identifies Broccoli as a level-six Cinnamon Bun, a class he does not understand. His contempt for the files and his judgment of people he has not met make him an imperfect leader, and Broccoli correctly sees that he should have prepared more carefully if his role was to protect the expedition members.
He nevertheless takes charge of the mission’s practical division of labor. Gabriel assigns the twins, Florien and France, to track a disturbance in the magical ley lines, while directing Broccoli and Amaryllis toward an abandoned fort built when war with the Trentans was feared. Their task is to investigate the fort and map the surrounding roads. The expedition is formalized as Exploration Guild Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC from the Port Royal branch, with the mission of exploring, scouting, and mapping the region around Fort Froger before returning to a designated meeting point. Gabriel’s casual manner therefore exists inside a real administrative structure, even if he does not embody its ideal discipline.
His most concrete display of competence occurs when France falls. Gabriel casts Featherfall, explaining that adventurers in his line of work either learn the spell or risk having to collect their insides after a fatal fall. The warning is crude, but the action is precise: he slows France’s descent and prevents a potentially catastrophic accident. This moment modifies Broccoli’s anger toward him. Gabriel’s conduct remains rude and careless, but his knowledge is not merely boastful; it can keep expedition members alive.
Conflict with Amaryllis and the Kidnapping Crisis
Gabriel’s relationship with Amaryllis is openly antagonistic. He treats the expedition as babysitting, complains about the assignment, and speaks dismissively of the people whose files he failed to read. Amaryllis responds with equal force, especially after the expedition encounters danger. When she storms into the inn searching for him, the room falls silent as she points at Gabriel and condemns him in furious terms. Rather than escalating, Gabriel and Broccoli begin laughing together, forcing Amaryllis to spend a full minute stomping and insulting them before they regain control of the conversation.
The humor disappears when Broccoli explains that Amaryllis was targeted for kidnapping by Cervid mercenaries. Gabriel immediately recognizes the strategic importance of the attack. Their presence on the Grenoil side of the border means that the Cervids have found a way to cross without detection, exposing failures in the patrol system. He also connects the danger to the expedition’s movements: the group’s ship is scheduled to leave for Port Royal early the next morning, and Gabriel proposes boarding it first and sending a message to the mayor of Green Hold. His response shows that the careless escort can become alert and operational when the stakes are clear.
Gabriel also accepts Broccoli’s suspicion that someone knew where Amaryllis would be. He explains that he had only recently received the mission parameters from Mister Rainnewt and had disliked them because babysitting missions were not his preference. This detail places him inside the larger breakdown surrounding the expedition: Rainnewt arranged the missions and later vanished, while Amaryllis believes he was involved in arranging her attempted kidnapping. Gabriel’s prior negligence does not make him the architect of the crisis, but it leaves him implicated in a system whose safeguards have failed.
Guild Judgment and Practical Protection
After Mister Rainnewt disappears, the Exploration Guild treats Broccoli as an administrative liability. A guild authority orders Gabriel to give her standard mission pay and show her out, declaring that Broccoli should never have been allowed to join. Gabriel’s response is not recorded as a formal defense, but his presence in the order is significant: even amid the guild’s effort to remove Broccoli, he is assigned the practical task of handling her departure. The episode contrasts institutional judgment with field experience. The guild sees an improperly admitted member; the expedition has seen someone who completed work, survived danger, and helped prevent Amaryllis’s abduction.
Amaryllis directly challenges the guild’s decision. She explains that Mister Rainnewt accepted Broccoli without proper channels, arranged the missions, and has gone missing, while Broccoli has done more to correct the guild’s mistakes than anyone else. Her defense also links the administrative irregularity to the kidnapping crisis. Gabriel’s earlier assignment therefore becomes part of the evidence against the guild’s simplistic solution: the temporary escort mission was mishandled, but Broccoli was not merely a burden within it.
Gabriel’s role in this conflict remains characteristically mixed. He is not presented as a model bureaucrat, and his drinking while on duty gives Amaryllis a legitimate reason to distrust him. At the same time, he possesses the field skills that formal procedures failed to deploy effectively. His equipment, Inspect ability, Featherfall spell, mission knowledge, and recognition of the Cervid threat together make him a figure of operational competence hidden beneath irresponsible habits.
Character Function and Significance
Gabriel functions as a threshold figure between the Exploration Guild’s paperwork and the physical dangers beyond its doors. The expedition summary, assigned objectives, border concerns, and travel arrangements belong to institutional order; his rope, knives, flasks, improvised supervision, and emergency magic belong to the unpredictable road. He moves between those worlds without fully conforming to either. That unstable position explains why he can be both a source of danger and a source of protection.
His treatment of Broccoli also establishes an important contrast in her development. Gabriel initially reduces her to a child requiring babysitting and cannot even identify the significance of her Cinnamon Bun class. Broccoli, however, evaluates him critically, refuses to imitate his vocabulary, notices his prejudices, and still recognizes his competence when he saves France. Their interaction is therefore not a simple mentor relationship. Gabriel is an abrasive senior adventurer whose practical knowledge is valuable but whose habits and assumptions must be judged rather than copied.
By the time the kidnapping is revealed, Gabriel’s laughter, drinking, and complaints no longer define him completely. Faced with the possibility of a cross-border operation against Amaryllis, he becomes sober enough to identify the danger and arrange an immediate return to Port Royal. His decisive trait is not reliability in the conventional sense but a capacity to convert rough experience into action when circumstances demand it. Gabriel remains flawed, undisciplined, and difficult to like, yet the expedition’s crises reveal why such a person was entrusted with dangerous work: beneath the performance of an irresponsible caretaker is an adventurer who knows how to keep others alive.
