Leonard Chand’nuit

Cinnamon Bun

Leonard Chand’nuit is a high-ranking samurai encountered by Broccoli Bunch during the expeditionary party’s stay in the Darkwoods. Introduced as the party’s sternest guardian and identified through Insight as “A frigid Samurai of the Moonless Night (level ???),” he embodies a world in which strength, discipline, and earned authority command more respect than wealth or birth. His decisive importance lies in the tension between his intimidating severity and the practical aid he ultimately gives Broccoli: he begins as a suspicious gatekeeper, yet becomes the source of the sealed letter that opens the way to the Exploration Guild.

Identity and Introduction

Leonard is the figure Broccoli first knows as “Leo,” the grumpy samurai among Emeric’s mixed party of adventurers. When Emeric introduces the group around the fire, Leonard gives his full name, shifts the hilt of his large sword, and crouches beside Emeric on a log. He announces that he will keep watch over Broccoli and will not allow the newcomer to interfere with the party’s business. The statement defines his entrance: he does not offer easy friendliness, and his presence is framed as supervision rather than welcome.

His self-presentation is reinforced by the party’s reactions. The samurai speaks with careful enunciation, pronouncing every word as though precision itself were a form of authority. He objects when Donat treats Broccoli as a disposable carrier and insists that Broccoli’s presence is a privilege that could still be revoked. Leonard’s language and posture make him a threshold guardian, testing whether an unfamiliar human can be tolerated near an experienced expedition rather than assuming that curiosity creates entitlement.

Broccoli’s Insight gives this severity a quantitative and almost mythic outline. Leonard appears as a “frigid Samurai of the Moonless Night” with an unreadable level marked by three question marks, a designation that places him beyond the protagonist’s ordinary ability to measure. Broccoli interprets the gap as evidence that Leonard is stronger than the others and perhaps therefore entitled to greater honor. The encounter consequently links Leonard’s personal hauteur to the novel’s larger leveling culture, where rank is not simply a private trait but a visible social language.

Authority, Suspicion, and the Threewells Interrogation

Leonard’s suspicion becomes overt when he demands that Broccoli reveal everything known about Threewells. Until that moment, Broccoli has regarded him as pompous, rude, and unpleasantly bad-tempered, but still as an ordinary person who could be reasoned with. The interrogation destroys that comforting assumption. Leonard grips Broccoli’s shoulders so tightly that movement becomes impossible, while an unseen force presses down on the protagonist. His authority is therefore not rhetorical alone; it is physical, magical, and immediately coercive.

The demand also reveals the stakes attached to Threewells. Leonard does not treat Broccoli’s experience as casual travel information or an amusing survival story. He handles it as intelligence that may determine the party’s conduct in a dangerous environment. His interrogation turns Broccoli from an accidental outsider into a potentially valuable witness, while Leonard’s methods show how quickly hospitality can give way to disciplined investigation when a dungeon, a ruined settlement, or an unseen threat is involved.

His concern with dangerous knowledge extends to Broccoli’s equipment and abilities. When Arianne asks about soul-bound magical jewelry, Leonard rebukes Broccoli for putting on strange jewelry and remarks that it is a miracle the protagonist is not already dead. He then orders Donat to fetch paper and an inkwell, offering a lesser gold piece if Broccoli helps recreate the map in a more legible hand. The offer is practical rather than sentimental: Leonard converts Broccoli’s possession of information into a controlled exchange, while also making clear that useful cooperation can earn compensation even within an atmosphere of distrust.

Relationship with Broccoli Bunch

Leonard’s relationship with Broccoli develops through a repeated contrast between insult and investment. He calls Broccoli a fool and an idiot, questions the wisdom of continuing alone, and initially treats the protagonist as a possible danger to the party’s mission. Yet he does not simply abandon Broccoli to the roads. He advises a return to Rockstack, where Juliette runs the inn and might provide work and protection. The advice recognizes Broccoli’s vulnerability while preserving Leonard’s blunt, unsentimental manner.

When Broccoli remains determined to pursue danger, Leonard supplies a second path. He gives Broccoli a folded parchment bearing a red wax seal and explains that his name carries weight at the Exploration Guild headquarters in Port Royal. The recommendation is conditional: Leonard believes the guild might see potential in Broccoli, provided Broccoli does not behave foolishly. His patronage is therefore neither unconditional approval nor a sudden conversion to warmth. It is a controlled endorsement, offered because Leonard sees a viable use or future in someone he still considers reckless.

The sealed letter becomes the material form of Leonard’s influence. Broccoli nearly breaks the seal while fiddling with it, provoking another insult, but the document survives intact. Days later, Broccoli presents it at the guild. Mister Rainnewt immediately recognizes the unbroken seal as coming from one of the guild’s senior members and identifies Leonard by name. The chain of consequence is direct: Leonard’s private judgment becomes institutional credibility, and his severe supervision of Broccoli in the Darkwoods becomes the basis for Broccoli’s reception in Port Royal.

Departure and Continuing Influence

Leonard’s departure leaves Broccoli with mixed feelings. The party shakes hands and moves away, while Broccoli waves goodbye, smiles despite the thick emotion in the throat, and imagines that the groups might meet again. The possibility of belonging to the same party remains unresolved, but Leonard’s parting advice gives the separation a direction rather than making it a simple abandonment. Broccoli continues into the unknown with a destination, a possible employer, and a sealed introduction carrying Leonard’s authority.

The later guild encounter confirms that Leonard’s influence persists beyond his physical appearance. Mister Rainnewt studies the seal, verifies that it is unbroken, and learns that Broccoli met Leonard in the Darkwoods. He then invites Broccoli to his office and suggests an interesting offer. Leonard is absent from this scene, but his recommendation controls its opening conditions: Broccoli is no longer merely an inexperienced traveler seeking information, but someone vouched for by a senior and formidable adventurer.

Narrative Role and Significance

Leonard functions as both guardian and gatekeeper. He guards the expedition from an unknown human whose abilities, possessions, and motives are uncertain, while also guarding Broccoli—however harshly—from the consequences of wandering without support. His interrogation dramatizes the cost of entering a world where information can be as dangerous as monsters; his map bargain shows that knowledge has an exchange value; and his letter demonstrates that trust can be formalized through a seal, a name, and an institution.

He also gives the leveling world a human face. The system rewards Broccoli for accepting a quest to confront evil, cleaning in accordance with the Cinnamon Bun class, defeating three Sentinel Ghosts, completing the Evil Root quest, and repeatedly practicing Friendmaking. Leonard represents the older social order that interprets those achievements through rank, caution, reputation, and responsibility. Where the system delivers bells, skills, experience, and declarations of thanks, Leonard offers suspicion, physical tests, blunt criticism, and finally a recommendation. His importance lies in showing that advancement requires more than surviving supernatural mechanics: it also requires being judged by people powerful enough to open or close the next door.
