Madness

Cinnamon Bun

Madness is a destabilizing mental state produced by exposure to the screech of a creature of madness. Its decisive importance lies in the way it turns perception and intention into immediate dangers: Broccoli Bunch does not merely become frightened, but loses physical control, misreads threats, and feels an unnatural pull toward the source of the sound. The state also establishes Cleaning magic as more than a practical household ability. In Broccoli’s hands, it becomes a means of clearing mental corruption and surviving encounters with creatures whose attacks invade the mind.

Trigger and Immediate Symptoms

Madness first appears when Broccoli hears a yowling roar while descending a ruined tower. The system warns that the sound has shaken the listener’s mind, and the effect is visible at once: Broccoli stumbles down the steps, clings to the rails, and experiences the world as swaying around her. The danger is not presented as an ordinary emotional reaction. A grotesque sound alters coordination and cognition together, making the body unreliable while leaving the source of the threat still uncertain.

The mental disturbance also produces an unsettling mismatch between sensation and interpretation. Broccoli begins giggling because the screech seems funny, even though the sound has already impaired her movement. Afterward, her thoughts remain fuzzy and strange; she bumps into a house and holds onto its wall for balance before wondering what has happened. The condition briefly makes the attraction of the threat stronger than every competing consideration. Walking toward the sound feels like the only meaningful action, while all other choices become distractions.

Loss of Judgment and Compulsion

The state becomes especially dangerous because it does not simply paralyze Broccoli. It distorts her priorities. After rereading Mister Menu’s warning, she recognizes that the situation is bad, yet feels pulled between laughing and curling up to scream. Orange presses against her neck and purrs, apparently attempting to interrupt or steady her, but Broccoli cannot initially identify what she is being protected from. The short duration of the first episode therefore does not make it harmless: even a temporary lapse can redirect her toward a lethal creature.

The same pattern recurs when an abomination gives a human-sounding scream during a pursuit. Broccoli turns and runs, but another exposure to the screech causes her mind to reverse the meaning of the chase. She stops and wonders why she had been fleeing, then decides that the monster may be friendly, hungry, and in need of feeding. Madness converts a survival response into an invitation to approach danger. The pursuing abomination is closer while Broccoli’s judgment is moving in the opposite direction, and the resulting conflict is between bodily urgency and a corrupted interpretation of that urgency.

Cleaning Magic as Countermeasure

Broccoli discovers that Cleaning magic can counteract Madness from within. During the first episode, she fires a small burst of the magic at herself to freshen up. The effect resembles wiping fog from a window: the spell moves through her, presses into her head, and causes the cobwebbed strangeness to clear. Her thoughts do not return in one sudden restoration; rather, the distortion recedes in stages, allowing her to recognize that she has been affected.

The discovery is significant because it expands the meaning of Cleaning beyond floors, clothes, and visible dirt. Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class describes her as a support figure who cleanses the world’s impurities in the name of love and justice, while her early use of the skill is mundane and materially focused. Yet the same power later reaches the mind. The narrative thus links purity, contamination, and care through a game-like system: a skill introduced as cleaning becomes a defensive technique against an invisible supernatural impurity.

The countermeasure remains costly and imperfect rather than effortless. Broccoli’s status shows Health at 111 out of 115 after the first incident, and the magic clears her mind in fits and starts during the later chase. She must keep moving while the abomination closes the distance, using the spell not as a complete shield but as a repeated means of recovering enough judgment to survive.

Bodily and Thematic Boundaries

Madness belongs to a wider pattern in which Broccoli’s magic repeatedly crosses the boundary between dirt on the outside and corruption within. The first form of Cleaning is laborious and physical: its proficiency improves the speed and quality of cleaning, and Broccoli uses a showerhead, mop, and bucket while her mana declines quickly. Later, the spell is directed at her own body and mind. The contrast makes the supernatural effect legible through domestic practice: the same character who sweeps dust into a garbage chest can also scrub away a mental fog.

This connection gives the state a distinctive thematic tension. Broccoli is marked by an ideal of excessive purity, yet she repeatedly encounters mud, sewage-like stench, bones, and other forms of contamination in the world around her. The madness-inducing screech introduces pollution that cannot be seen or smelled, but that still produces bodily consequences: stumbling, altered laughter, compulsion, and the loss of coherent choice. Cleaning magic responds by restoring a boundary between Broccoli and the invading influence.

Narrative Function

Madness raises the stakes of encounters with abominations because physical distance alone does not guarantee safety. A creature can attack through sound, and the victim may become an accomplice to the attack by forgetting why escape was necessary. The recurring warning after separate screech exposures gives the state a recognizable pattern while emphasizing its tactical consequences: flee, become confused, approach the threat, and then fight to recover the ability to choose.

At the same time, the condition develops Broccoli’s class identity. Her strength is not framed solely as destructive force; survival depends on support, self-care, and the cleansing of an injury that is simultaneously magical, psychological, and bodily. Madness therefore makes her ordinary-seeming ability unexpectedly central to adventuring. It is a condition of impaired agency, but it also reveals the particular form of agency available to Broccoli: she answers corruption with Cleaning magic and turns an apparently humble skill into a tool for preserving judgment.
