Met the Exploration Guild Expedition Team
Cinnamon BunThe Encounter with the Exploration Guild Party marks Broccoli Bunch’s first substantial contact with an organized adventuring society after her isolation in Threewells. What begins as a chance meeting on a wooded road becomes an exchange of identities, information, supplies, and trust: Broccoli discovers a camp of Grenoil explorers, and the party discovers a remarkably talkative human whose knowledge of Threewells may affect their expedition. The encounter changes Broccoli’s immediate prospects, but its deeper importance lies in giving her a social future. She leaves not merely with directions to Rockstack, but with named contacts, a guild recommendation, and the newly unlocked general skill Friendmaking.
Circumstances and First Contact
The meeting occurs while Broccoli is moving through the woods and trying to improve her view of a distant column of smoke. She wonders whether it might indicate an inhabited settlement like Threewells, then pauses in mid-jump after hearing voices below. The speakers are not ordinary woodland creatures: one complains about always being sent to clear the path, while another answers in a deeper voice. When Broccoli descends, she sees two figures cutting branches and brambles from the road with long knives, one chopping and the other throwing the debris aside.
Their appearance immediately identifies them as Grenoil rather than human. They have smooth greenish skin, thick legs, squat features, and clothing cut to fit their proportions. The older-looking ranger wears articulated leather and metal armor over the legs and shoulders, with a breastplate visible beneath a jacket; the other is identified as a nervous Grenoil Fencer at level 9. The first is a bored Grenoil Swamp Ranger of unknown level. Broccoli’s delighted recognition that she has met “a pair of frog people” sets the emotional tone of the encounter: the road is cleared by practical expedition work, but Broccoli experiences it as the threshold to companionship.
She lands directly on the road before the two adventurers, smiling rather than hiding. The ranger raises a webbed hand and invites her back to the camp, explaining that others there may want to examine her. The fencer objects to bringing her along, and the ranger’s answer reveals the party’s immediate concern: releasing her might jeopardize the expedition. Broccoli is therefore welcomed conditionally, as both a possible risk and a possible source of useful information.
The Grenoil Expedition Camp
The camp lies in a clearing beside the road. Several Grenoil sit around a small fire while another sets up a tent; a cauldron hangs from a rack, and the smell of stew is strong enough to make the scene feel almost like a homecoming. One member skins a small creature nearby, providing the prospect of fresh meat after Broccoli’s prolonged diet of honey. The ranger returns ahead of her, and Donat announces that they have found a human, bringing the whole group together.
Broccoli responds to the gathered expedition with characteristic directness. She bows, introduces herself as Broccoli Bunch, and proposes friendship before the strangers have decided whether she is safe. Her ability to speak their language surprises the younger-looking frog-girl and makes the encounter stranger for the party. The samurai, Leonard Chand’nuit, treats her with suspicion and demands to know why Donat did not question the matter before bringing her in. Broccoli refuses to be intimidated when Leonard orders her to be quiet and threatens to tie her up, criticizing his bullying without pretending that his authority does not exist.
The confrontation is softened by the twin-sword fighter, Emeric, who tells Broccoli to sit by the fire and be welcome so long as she causes no harm. He then identifies the party: Emeric himself, Arianne the wizard, Pierre the ranger and scout, Valerie, Donat, and Leonard Chand’nuit. The camp thus becomes more than a backdrop. Its fire, stew, tents, armor, weapons, and bandoleers establish the expedition as a functioning collective with differentiated roles, while Broccoli’s introduction converts a potentially hostile inspection into a social meeting.
Information, Work, and the Road Ahead
The party learns that Broccoli is a level-four Cinnamon Bun and asks what she is doing alone in the woods. Her answer is simply that she is lost, but Emeric offers a practical solution: she may remain with them for the night, after which they will direct her to Rockstack. He describes Rockstack as a small outpost run by several guilds, where someone as clever as Broccoli might find work and eventually join the Exploration Guild.
This offer gives Broccoli her first clear institutional horizon. The Exploration Guild sounds to her like an adventurer’s guild organized around tombs, discoveries, and unexplored places rather than routine monster extermination. Emeric confirms that he, Arianne, Pierre, and Valerie belong to the same exploration team. Leonard is a senior member who has joined the expedition because its destination is more dangerous, while Donat is accompanying them because he is close to reaching his class evolution if they find a dungeon. The explanation links the party’s social structure to the world’s class and dungeon systems: membership, expertise, seniority, and advancement all influence who takes part in dangerous work.
Broccoli contributes information in return. She retrieves her Threewells map and gives it to Leonard, explaining that she explored most of the town. Leonard recognizes its significance immediately, and his widened eyes show that the apparently lost child possesses knowledge relevant to the expedition. The map is therefore both a record of Broccoli’s past survival and a bargaining tool in her new social environment. She is not merely being rescued; she can offer intelligence, and that changes how the party must assess her.
Parting Gifts and Immediate Consequences
The party cannot take Broccoli with them. Emeric explains that they are not simply traveling to Threewells: if its Dungeon remains active, it will be outrageously dangerous for someone at her level, and the expedition must move quickly. Broccoli insists that she can move quickly, but Emeric still directs her toward Rockstack and recommends Juliette, who runs the inn and may be able to provide work. His advice combines protection with independence: Broccoli is not carried onward as a helpless passenger, but sent toward a place where she can establish herself.
Leonard offers a second route. If Broccoli insists on behaving foolishly, he tells her to go to Port Royal and gives her a folded parchment bearing a red wax seal. His name carries weight there, and the headquarters of the Exploration Guild may recognize potential in her, provided she does not break the seal. The object materially extends the encounter beyond the camp. Broccoli leaves with a formal connection to an institution she has only just learned about, while Leonard’s guarded gesture complicates his earlier hostility. His suspicion remains, but it has become a form of responsibility rather than simple rejection.
Emeric supplies a basic map, and the party leaves her canned goods, small provisions, their last loaf of proper bread, and hardtack. These supplies matter because Broccoli has been living precariously; the encounter changes the question from whether she can survive the next moment to where she will go next. After the party departs, she hides her disappointment, gathers her belongings, and continues into the unknown while hoping that their paths may cross again.
Lasting Significance
The encounter’s immediate value shift runs from isolation toward provisional belonging, but it does not resolve into permanent membership. Broccoli is accepted at the fire, yet excluded from the dangerous expedition; treated as a possible threat, yet trusted with food and directions; regarded as an inexperienced child, yet taken seriously once her Threewells map reveals what she knows. This tension defines the event more precisely than a simple first meeting. The party cannot absorb her into its mission, but it gives her the means to enter a larger world on her own terms.
The game-like system recognizes the social pattern as meaningful progress. After Broccoli says goodbye and sets out, a notification announces that repeating a Special Action enough times has unlocked the general skill Friendmaking. The reward makes explicit what the scene has dramatized: Broccoli’s instinct to introduce herself, seek companionship, and answer suspicion with openness is not merely comic behavior. It is an action the world can measure, reinforce, and turn into capability.
The event also foreshadows Broccoli’s later expansion from solitary survivor to networked adventurer. She eventually describes Amaryllis as a friend after shared danger and rescue, and later remains involved in the Exploration Guild crisis when Rainnewt’s irregular recruitment and attempted kidnapping are exposed. Abraham’s compromise to take Broccoli and Amaryllis west to Greenshade, together with Amaryllis’s insistence that Broccoli should not be expelled, shows how far the initial impulse toward connection can travel. The Grenoil camp is the first place where that impulse becomes reciprocal: Broccoli seeks friends, and the expedition, despite caution and disagreement, gives her a place by the fire and a road forward.
