Mister Menu

Cinnamon Bun

Mister Menu is the floating system interface through which Broccoli Bunch encounters the world’s rules, making it one of the most important mediating presences in the story. It converts danger, labor, curiosity, and repeated behavior into visible prompts: a quest to confront a great evil, the unlocking of Cleaning, the improvement of Jumping, the creation of Friendmaking, and the possibility of merging skills. Its decisive significance lies in this double function. Mister Menu is both an impersonal mechanism that evaluates Broccoli and a conversational companion whom Broccoli gradually treats as a shy, reticent individual.

Identity and Appearance

Mister Menu appears as a box floating before Broccoli, with a bluish surface on which notifications and profile information are displayed. The interface is sufficiently visible and responsive for Broccoli to read its messages, poke it, and monitor changes in skills and rank. At other times, the narrative refers to it simply as “the menu,” emphasizing that its presence is familiar enough to become part of Broccoli’s ordinary surroundings rather than a spectacular interruption.

Its apparent objectivity is expressed through terse system notices. It announces that “A great evil has set its root in the world” and asks whether Broccoli accepts the quest to save it. It also records completed objectives, including a quest update and a quest completion, and reports that three Sentinel Ghosts of Threewells by Darkwood, each level 1, have given up the ghost, with bonus experience awarded because the enemies were above Broccoli’s level. Mister Menu therefore does not merely display information already understood by the character; it frames experience through a formal vocabulary of quests, enemies, levels, completion, and reward.

Interface of Progression

Mister Menu’s most sustained role is to make Broccoli’s development legible. After Broccoli performs a Special Action in line with the Cinnamon Bun class, the interface announces that the Cleaning skill has been unlocked. Repetition produces another kind of advancement: repeating a Special Action enough times unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. Later, repeated actions improve Jumping until that skill becomes eligible for rank advancement. These notifications establish a feedback loop in which ordinary conduct is transformed into measurable progress.

The interface also marks thresholds without necessarily explaining them in emotional or social terms. It flashes when Broccoli is eligible for a rank increase and displays a status of “Rank B -00%.” Such messages give Broccoli a concrete sense that advancement remains possible, even when the numerical or procedural details are not immediately reassuring. Near the end of the supplied material, Broccoli studies the profile displayed by Mister Menu and asks how many General Skills can be possessed. Broccoli’s later realization that improvement is still possible confirms that the interface functions not only as a record of achievement but also as a horizon of future potential.

Mister Menu further governs the relation between separate abilities. When Cleaning and Friendmaking become eligible for merging, Broccoli reacts with renewed hope and asks what “Merging?” means. The system explains that merging resets the merged skill to the lowest rank, refunds all skill and general points, permits the selection of a new slot if one is available, and requires the resulting skill to match class requirements. This rule-bound explanation reveals the interface’s central ethic: progress is flexible, but never free. Advancement involves trade-offs, limited slots, refunded resources, and compatibility with the chosen class.

Communication and Companionship

Broccoli’s relationship with Mister Menu gradually exceeds the practical use of a status screen. After being busy and not speaking to it for some time, Broccoli addresses it directly and invites it to explain something about itself, while also remarking that it is shy when on the job. The language is playful and relational. Broccoli treats the floating box as a presence capable of withdrawing, answering, and perhaps possessing a temperament, even though the evidence presents no independent biography for the interface.

This intimacy is balanced by embarrassment. When Amaryllis is nearby, Broccoli checks notifications quietly because Broccoli does not want Amaryllis to think that Broccoli is the sort of person who talks to a system menu. The scene gives Mister Menu an unusual social position: it is publicly useful but privately intimate, a companion whose existence Broccoli is willing to acknowledge in solitude yet reluctant to explain to another adventurer. The embarrassment does not erase the attachment; it shows that Broccoli’s conversations with the interface have become personal enough to require concealment.

Broccoli also asks Mister Menu to display the profile directly. That request turns the interface into an object of self-knowledge. The profile offers a structured image of Broccoli that can be checked, reread, and interpreted, but it does not replace Broccoli’s own uncertainty. The menu provides categories and thresholds; Broccoli supplies the questions, hopes, and anxieties that make those categories meaningful.

Interruptions, Judgment, and Control

Mister Menu’s messages do not always arrive at convenient moments. While Broccoli is holding a broom and working, the interface presents information that absorbs attention so completely that the broom slackens. Broccoli recognizes that Juliette would likely be disappointed if she inspected the cleaning and found Broccoli neglecting the task. The episode places system knowledge against embodied labor: a notification can suspend the very class-aligned activity that generates progress.

The interface can also intrude during danger. After a creature’s screech shakes Broccoli’s mind, Mister Menu remains part of the stream through which the experience is interpreted. During another moment, the prompt becomes an accusation, and Broccoli tells Mister Menu, “Not now.” The prompt then disappears. This exchange is important because it shows that Broccoli is not entirely passive before the system. Broccoli can reject its timing, and the menu can respond by withdrawing the message. Its authority is real, but it is not absolute in every interaction.

The same pattern appears when Jumping becomes eligible for a rank increase during a demanding situation. Broccoli again mutters, “Not now,” prioritizing the immediate circumstances over the promise of advancement. Mister Menu’s notifications thus create a recurring contrast between measurable progress and lived urgency. A skill can be ready to rise, yet the character may lack the attention or safety to accept the information. The system records the threshold, but Broccoli decides when that threshold can matter.

Narrative Function and Significance

Mister Menu gives the novel a procedural grammar without reducing every consequence to a simple reward. A quest may begin with a warning about evil; a Special Action may become Cleaning; repeated social behavior may become Friendmaking; repeated movement may improve Jumping; and three defeated Sentinel Ghosts may yield bonus experience because of their level difference. These conversions make the world appear governable, but they also reveal how much of Broccoli’s life is being interpreted through external categories.

At the same time, the interface rewards actions that connect progression to conduct. Cleaning follows a class-consistent action, while Friendmaking emerges from repeated behavior rather than a single declaration of friendship. The system therefore turns habits into abilities and gives mechanical recognition to forms of care, sociability, and persistence that might otherwise remain invisible. Its rules do not simply measure Broccoli’s identity; they help produce the identity of the Cinnamon Bun class by telling Broccoli which actions count.

Mister Menu’s importance finally comes from the tension between its cold format and Broccoli’s warm address. It speaks in notices such as quest updates, rank percentages, eligibility messages, and merging rules, yet Broccoli asks about it, apologizes for neglecting it, pokes its display, and imagines it as shy. The interface remains a system rather than a fully established person, but the narrative repeatedly tests the boundary between tool and companion. For Broccoli, progression is never only a numerical process. It is also a conversation with the presence that names each change, interrupts each crisis, and makes the next possibility visible.
