Return to Green Hold
Cinnamon BunReturn to Green Hold marks the moment when a failed rescue stops looking like an isolated attack and becomes a possible infiltration crisis. After Amaryllis is targeted by Cervid mercenaries, Broccoli, Amaryllis, and Gabriel reconstruct what happened, recognize that the attackers knew where to find her, and arrange an early departure for Port Royal. The action therefore converts survival into investigation: the immediate danger has passed, but the unexplained knowledge behind the ambush points toward betrayal within the surrounding network.
From Kidnapping to Security Crisis
The investigation begins with Broccoli’s blunt report that someone tried to kidnap Amaryllis. Gabriel initially treats the news as limited because the attempt failed, but Amaryllis immediately supplies the decisive identification: the attackers were not random criminals but Cervid mercenaries, and they had come specifically for her. Her statement changes the stakes from an ordinary roadside danger to a targeted operation with a particular captive and an intended destination.
Gabriel understands why that distinction matters. Cervids appearing on this side of the border means that they have found a way to cross without being detected, despite the weakness of the existing patrols. The danger is therefore geographical as well as personal: Fort Frogger’s old defensive purpose, built around the expectation of invasion, gives the attack a larger historical and political shadow. The mercenaries’ presence suggests that the border has been penetrated and that the fort’s protective system may no longer be reliable.
Reconstructing the Betrayal
Amaryllis explains that, without Broccoli’s intervention, she might already have been taken toward Manamere or another place from which her captors could demand a ransom. This counterfactual gives Broccoli’s rescue its full importance while also clarifying the attackers’ objective. They were not merely trying to injure or intimidate her; they intended to remove her from the group and turn her into leverage.
Broccoli then identifies the most troubling unresolved fact: someone had to know where the party would be. The attackers’ precise interest in Amaryllis and their arrival at the party’s location make accidental discovery difficult to accept. Broccoli does not yet know the complete history between the Cervids and the grenoils, but Fort Frogger’s role as an old watch post makes the hostile relationship apparent enough for him to suspect that information was leaked. Amaryllis confirms his reasoning rather than dismissing it, making the possibility of an insider or compromised channel central to the aftermath.
Gabriel’s Emergency Plan
Gabriel responds by turning the discovery into a concrete travel decision. Their ship back to Port Royal is scheduled to pass early the next morning and is supposed to wait for the entire group before departing. Gabriel proposes that they board first thing, return to Port Royal, and leave a message with the mayor of Green Hold. The plan removes the party from a location that may have been exposed while notifying local authority of the Cervid threat.
The urgency is reinforced by Gabriel’s newly received mission parameters from Rainnewt. He says that the assignment is effectively a babysitting mission, work he does not particularly enjoy, yet the attack demonstrates why such protection was necessary. His mention of Rainnewt places the incident within an official chain of missions rather than treating it as a private quarrel. At the same time, the mission’s connection to a successful ambush raises the uncomfortable possibility that information passed through that chain may have been vulnerable, even though the scene does not establish who, if anyone, betrayed the party.
Aftermath and Narrative Significance
The immediate aftermath is unsettled rather than triumphant. Gabriel and Broccoli can laugh together before the disclosure, but the revelation about the mercenaries sobers Gabriel and redirects the conversation toward borders, patrols, ransom, and departure. Amaryllis is visibly stressed and leaves to arrange a room and a night watch with Broccoli, while Broccoli apologizes for her sharpness without abandoning the substance of her concern. Their practical response—securing lodging, maintaining a watch, and leaving at dawn—shows that the group treats the threat as active even after the kidnappers have failed.
Return to Green Hold thus functions as a hinge between rescue and conspiracy. The action does not solve the mystery of the leak, and it does not prove that Rainnewt or any member of the local administration is responsible. Instead, it establishes the questions that govern the next movement: how the Cervids crossed the border, who revealed Amaryllis’s location, whether the patrols or mission structure have been compromised, and whether Port Royal will provide safety or merely a new setting for the danger. Its decisive consequence is a change in interpretation. What first appeared to be an attack has become evidence that the party’s movements and affiliations are being watched.
