Riftwalkers
Cinnamon BunRiftwalkers are arrivals from another world who appear in connection with newly manifested dungeons, a phenomenon that makes Broccoli Bunch’s summoning both personal crisis and evidence of a wider pattern. Their defining mystery is not merely where they come from, but why the world seems to place them beside dungeons and sometimes confront them with impossible quests.
Definition and Discovery
Riftwalkers first become an explicit category when Gunther recognizes that Broccoli Bunch is not native to Dirt. He identifies Broccoli as someone who appeared with a dungeon and tells her that she is “not from this world.” The revelation transforms details that had seemed like private confusion into signs of an external origin: Broccoli has arrived in a setting whose languages, customs, magic, and dungeon structures are unfamiliar, yet she has been able to function within it from the beginning.
Gunther’s diagnosis rests partly on language. During their conversation, he speaks each sentence in a different language, and Broccoli does not react to the changes. He explains that an advanced skill called Tongues can produce a similar effect, although he does not possess it and learned several languages by ordinary effort. Riftwalkers, by contrast, are rumored to receive this linguistic gift upon arrival. The ability therefore operates as a quiet marker of displacement: Broccoli does not initially know that she is doing something extraordinary because the world has made communication seem natural to her.
A Recurring Phenomenon
Gunther describes Riftwalkers as recurring rather than unique. In his account, there is one for nearly every new dungeon, although the arrivals are not always people. Those capable of speech commonly report being assigned a difficult or impossible quest, while other cases involve strange and unique animals or creatures appearing beside new dungeons. The pattern consequently extends beyond human or even sapient travelers; the dungeon’s emergence may be accompanied by a being drawn from elsewhere.
The relationship between arrival and quest is especially important because Broccoli’s own experience begins with a direct summons. A translucent menu presents the declaration that a great evil has rooted itself in the world and asks whether she will accept the quest to save it. She initially suspects that the message cannot be real, but the prompt, its acceptance and refusal options, and the later progression of her abilities place her inside the same dungeon-centered structure Gunther associates with Riftwalkers. Her arrival is thus followed not by an explanation, but by a demand for action.
The Riftwalker Pattern in Practice
Broccoli’s subsequent development illustrates the kind of life Gunther associates with the phenomenon. The quest system rewards actions that fit her Cinnamon Bun class: cleaning a room unlocks the Cleaning skill, defeating three Sentinel Ghosts grants bonus experience for killing enemies above her level, and completing a dangerous objective produces the emphatic message that the world thanks her for her sacrifice. Repeating social behavior eventually unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. These notifications make her passage through the world legible as a sequence of quests, special actions, rewards, and escalating consequences.
Her route also shows that Riftwalker experiences are not confined to abstract destiny. Broccoli encounters a dungeon built from recognizable but transformed cultural material: the poisoned cake and shrinking potion evoke Alice in Wonderland; banners display hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades; a royal decree invokes the Queen of Hearts; and the Zombie of Cheshire appears as a level-five boss. The unfamiliar world therefore meets the newcomer through forms that are at once recognizable and dangerous. Broccoli can identify the references, but recognition does not make the dungeon safe, and the system’s quests convert literary echoes into immediate survival problems.
Uncertainty, Blessing, and Ordinary Life
Gunther emphasizes how little is actually known. New dungeons may appear every day, but they are usually separated by great distances and found in inhospitable places, making meetings between Riftwalkers unlikely. The phenomenon is therefore widespread in rumor but fragmented in experience. Even a person who knows the pattern cannot provide Broccoli with a reliable explanation of its purpose or mechanism.
Nor does being a Riftwalker guarantee a heroic fate. Gunther says that many arrivals go on to live rather mundane lives, despite the difficult quests they may initially describe. The world may bless them, or it may not; he can offer only what the rumors agree upon. This uncertainty prevents the category from functioning as a simple promise of greatness. It describes an origin and a set of recurring signs, not a fixed destiny.
Narrative Significance
Riftwalkers connect three otherwise separate mysteries: the sudden appearance of dungeons, the system of quests and class-based advancement, and Broccoli Bunch’s displacement from Earth. The concept gives retrospective shape to her earliest experiences. The summons to save the world, the ability to acquire skills through class-aligned actions, and the discovery of a setting that turns familiar Wonderland imagery into dungeon hazards all become parts of a larger structure rather than isolated oddities.
At the same time, the idea preserves the central character’s uncertainty. Broccoli learns that others like her exist, but not what brought them, what the world expects of them, or whether her own quest has any predetermined conclusion. Riftwalker identity is therefore both explanation and complication: it names her difference while leaving its deepest cause unresolved, turning arrival itself into the first stage of an ongoing adventure.
