Rockstack Route Map
Cinnamon BunThe Rockstack Route Map is a hand-drawn navigation aid made by Leonard Chand’nuit for Broccoli Bunch. More than a simple route sketch, it converts Leonard’s local knowledge into a portable plan: it identifies the camp, records the road, marks a fork, points toward Rockstack, and warns of danger through a skull-and-crossbones symbol. Its decisive importance is practical and narrative alike. The map gives Broccoli a direction to follow while also defining the limits of what Leonard considers safe knowledge for an inexperienced explorer.
Creation and Exchange
Leonard produces the map as part of a bargain rather than as an unprompted gift. After questioning Broccoli about soul-bound magical jewelry and noticing the bronze ring on Broccoli’s hand, Leonard asks Donat to fetch paper and an inkwell. He offers one gold coin if Broccoli will help recreate the map in a less childish hand, then immediately revises the payment to “A lesser gold.” The exchange makes the map both a tool and a measure of value: Leonard supplies geographical information, while Broccoli’s unfamiliar ability to translate or reproduce it becomes useful labor.
The physical act of making the map is carefully specified. Donat brings a small satchel, and Leonard uses a wooden board with an inkwell built into it, a long feather, and yellowish paper. Once the agreement is accepted, Leonard flicks a small, thick, heavy coin to Broccoli, who catches it and puts it into the backpack. The map therefore enters Broccoli’s possession through a compact transaction involving craft, money, and unequal knowledge. Leonard’s concern that Broccoli should not casually wear strange jewelry also frames the map’s creation as part of a wider attempt to keep the newcomer alive.
Route Information
The map shows the camp, the road, and the intersection where the road divides. Its principal instruction is an arrow pointing ahead toward Rockstack, which Leonard’s map places not terribly far away. By the time Broccoli reaches the fork, half the distance has already been crossed, turning the map from a static object into a confirmation of progress and a basis for the next decision.
The map also records a more ominous alternative. The left-hand path continues into the forest and ends in a large skull-and-crossbones symbol. The mark does not explain the threat, but it communicates Leonard’s judgment with immediate clarity: the route is dangerous enough to be singled out rather than treated as an ordinary branch. Broccoli wonders what lies beyond it and recognizes that Leonard has deliberately represented the danger, even while Broccoli suspects that Leonard underestimates Broccoli’s competence in other matters.
Use at the Dunwich Dungeon
Broccoli later consults the map while seeking the Dunwich Dungeon for a flower-picking task. A guard explains that the dungeon lies west and north, a direction Broccoli must correct against an earlier assumption that Port Royal lies north. Broccoli then retrieves Leonard’s map from the bandolier and asks the guard to locate the dungeon on it. The guard identifies the destination by the same skull-and-crossbones sign, confirming that Leonard’s warning points to the Dunwich Dungeon.
The guard’s further description gives the symbol a grim context. A group of divers visited the place a week or two earlier, returned startled, and reported that there was nothing worth looting there. The map’s warning thus corresponds not merely to Leonard’s caution but to a site associated with fear and disappointment. Its sign marks a place whose danger exceeds its apparent material reward, making the route a threshold between ordinary travel and an expedition motivated by something other than treasure.
Function and Significance
Broccoli carries the map while walking, taking it from the backpack at the fork and later pulling it from the bandolier when asking for directions. These repeated acts show how the object moves between storage and active interpretation. It is not a magical revelation or an all-knowing chart; it must be read alongside landscape, spoken directions, and the changing understanding of Port Royal’s position. Its usefulness depends on Broccoli’s willingness to compare the drawn route with what is actually visible.
The map also embodies Leonard’s relationship with Broccoli. Leonard treats Broccoli as inexperienced and in need of warnings, yet he still entrusts Broccoli with a carefully prepared route and pays for assistance in reproducing it. The result is a compromise between mentorship and skepticism. Broccoli receives a path toward Rockstack, a visible warning about the road to the Dunwich Dungeon, and a material reminder that exploration requires more than movement: it requires interpreting other people’s knowledge without surrendering independent judgment.
