Slimes

Cinnamon Bun

Slimes are creatures formed from concentrations of ambient mana, not sapient beings with homes or families. Their apparently simple nature matters because it places them at the boundary between living monster and environmental manifestation: they arise from local magical conditions, move through the landscape, and attach themselves to magical targets without possessing the social world Broccoli Bunch initially imagines for them. In the story, they are therefore less a civilization to understand than a recurring hazard to classify, avoid, and remove.

Nature and Behavior

Slimes appear as gelatinous masses of magical material. Their bodies can absorb or adhere to things carrying magic, including people, making contact dangerous even when the creatures themselves are described as nuisances rather than intelligent antagonists. Their physical form also incorporates whatever they have encountered: one enormous slime contains the visibly half-digested body of a rabbit near its core, turning an otherwise abstract concentration of mana into a grotesque image of consumption and decomposition.

The explanation given to Broccoli Bunch establishes that slimes are produced by particular kinds of ambient mana. This makes their presence dependent on magical ecology rather than on ordinary reproduction or settlement. Broccoli’s concern about slime homes and families is answered by a distinction between apparent creaturehood and actual sentience: the slimes roll toward magic, stick to it, and behave as hazards, but the evidence does not present them as people with communities or personal intentions.

Encounters in the Marsh

The most sustained encounters occur during Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis Albatross’s nighttime journey through the swamps toward Green Hold. The pair advance through fog with the rune-light on Broccoli’s helmet and Amaryllis’s constructed light guiding them. The obscured marsh sounds make the route frightening, while both adventurers’ first-tier status leaves them vulnerable to monsters seeking an easy meal.

At first, Amaryllis uses thunder magic against the approaching slimes. She later proposes alternating their attacks so that one of them can keep mana in reserve while the other fights. This practical adjustment turns the journey into an exercise in resource management as well as defense. The slimes are numerous enough to make pacing necessary, yet their numbers diminish near Green Hold, possibly because patrols control the area or because the town’s mana environment does not support their nightly spawning as readily.

The slimes also establish a contrast between environmental danger and social danger. They are frightening in the darkness, but their behavior is legible: they approach, cling to magic, and can be destroyed. Broccoli’s deeper anxiety is not merely surviving the marsh; it is becoming strong enough to fight on personal terms and to make others hesitate before harming friends. Each defeated slime consequently serves as both an immediate clearance of the road and a small increment toward the strength Broccoli wants for future confrontations.

Cleaning Magic as Offense

Broccoli Bunch’s first class is Cinnamon Bun, whose description presents Broccoli as an exceptionally pure, supportive friend charged with cleansing the world’s impurities. The class description is initially comic and embarrassing to Broccoli, but the slimes reveal how literally the world can translate that moral and domestic vocabulary into action. Broccoli’s Cleaning skill begins as the ability to clean faster and better, supported by practical tools such as a showerhead, mop, and bucket. Its magic later becomes an offensive force against ghosts, and slimes provide its clearest battlefield application.

During the swamp journey, Broccoli casts Cleanthrower at a nearby slime. Cleaning magic pours from an open palm like water from a garden hose and melts the greyish gelatinous mass apart. Against the larger slime, Broccoli performs an elaborate chant and stance before releasing a white ball of cleaning magic. The projectile travels unevenly through the air, strikes the creature’s chest, and continues through its entire body, carving a hole that causes the slime to collapse.

The scene is deliberately comic—the chant makes Broccoli louder rather than more effective in the way Broccoli claims—but the underlying result is serious. A skill associated with tidying dust, washing floors, and restoring order becomes a ranged attack capable of dissolving magical monsters. The transformation does not abandon the skill’s original meaning; it weaponizes it. Slimes are destroyed not by a conventional blade or elemental spell, but by a force that treats their magical bodies as matter requiring removal.

Broccoli’s earlier use of Cleaning magic against a ghost reinforces this pattern. When a ghost reaches Broccoli and claws at the face and head, Cleaning magic shoots into it and the ghost bursts apart. Slimes extend that same logic from undead bodies to ambient magical matter. The skill is thus both maintenance and violence, a means of restoring boundaries by eliminating whatever has crossed into the adventurer’s path.

Narrative Function and Significance

Slimes recur as low-level opponents, but their narrative function exceeds simple encounter design. They give Broccoli a safe-enough scale on which to test developing abilities, gain experience, and learn to coordinate with Amaryllis Albatross. Their defeat supplies immediate progress, including movement toward the next level and the class point Broccoli needs, while their abundance makes tactical choices visible: when to cast, when to switch partners, and how much mana to preserve.

They also clarify Broccoli’s evolving self-definition within a team. When questioned about combat, movement, and position, Broccoli describes limited fighting ability, a makeshift weapon proficiency, extensive Cleaning magic for undead and similar threats, and a preference for functioning as ranged damage. The slime encounters substantiate that claim. Broccoli is not yet a confident front-line fighter, but can contribute from a distance by projecting Cleaning magic into approaching targets.

At the same time, slimes sharpen the book’s recurring opposition between impurity and care. Broccoli reacts strongly to physical disgust elsewhere in the journey: sewage-like stench after escaping abominations, mud rising almost to the lips during concealment, insects discovered in food, and the sticky spectacle of pixies gorging themselves on honey. Against this background, cleaning is never merely neutral hygiene. It is a way of deciding what may remain, what must be removed, and whether contamination should provoke fear, pity, endurance, or action. The slimes make that decision literal. They are born from the magical environment, attach themselves to magic, and are answered by a protagonist whose defining power is to cleanse without abandoning the impulse to be helpful.

Their final importance lies in this fusion of worldbuilding and character development. Because slimes are tied to ambient mana, they register changes in magical ecology; because they are recurring nuisances, they make travel and settlement visibly dependent on local conditions; and because Cleaning magic defeats them, they turn Broccoli Bunch’s apparently gentle class into a credible combat role. Every collapsed slime leaves the road clearer, Broccoli more experienced, and the meaning of purity more complicated: cleansing can be kindness, sanitation, classification, or force, depending on what stands before it.
