The Destruction of the Wonderland Dungeon Core

Cinnamon Bun

The Destruction of the Wonderland Dungeon Core is the terminal action of the Wonderland Dungeon expedition and the event that converts Broccoli Bunch’s investigation of the dungeon’s corruption into a completed world-level quest. After discovering an Evil Root wrapped around the Dungeon Core, Broccoli cannot destroy the root directly and is instructed to break the core so that the root will starve. The choice succeeds, but it also destabilizes the entire dungeon, forcing a desperate escape into Threewells as the underground structure collapses behind her.

Discovery of the Evil Root

The event begins when Broccoli reaches a chamber containing two glowing portals. One portal shows Threewells outside the dungeon; the other opens onto a small room with a stone pillar. An egg-like object rests on the pillar, covered in glowing roots. The quest system identifies this object as the Evil Root and updates the objective: it must be destroyed to cleanse the land. The scene therefore links the abandoned settlement’s contamination to a specific, physical source rather than leaving the dungeon’s evil as an abstract supernatural condition.

Broccoli uses Insight on both the orb and the roots. The orb is identified as the Dungeon Core for the Wonderland Dungeon, while the surrounding growth is identified as an Evil Root. The apparent simplicity of the discovery is deceptive. When Broccoli tries to damage the root with her spade, the blow does not leave even a mark. The quest menu then revises the instructions: Broccoli is too weak to destroy the Evil Root directly and must break the core, allowing the root to starve. The solution changes the objective from cleansing the corruption at its visible source to severing the structure that sustains it.

Breaking the Core

Broccoli first tests the core with her Cleaning magic. When she touches it and releases the spell, the magic spreads from her fingertip across the surface as a glowing ring, travels to the opposite side, and returns. The core then cracks with a glass-like crunch. What begins as a hairline fracture races across the surface like breaking Antarctic ice, turning a careful magical experiment into an irreversible act of destruction.

The act is significant because Cleaning has appeared as a modest practical ability as well as a weapon. Broccoli’s Cleaning Skill is described as the ability to clean, and at rank F its usefulness is limited; nevertheless, Cleaning magic previously bursts apart a ghost when directed against it. At the Dungeon Core, the same general principle reaches a much larger consequence. The spell does not merely remove dirt or defeat a minor undead opponent: it initiates the destruction of the dungeon’s central sustaining object.

The system immediately issues a Dungeon Warning: dungeon stability is failing, and evacuation is required. The warning makes the cost of Broccoli’s success explicit. Destroying the core does not produce a safe, orderly victory. It places the entire environment on a countdown and turns the completed objective into an escape sequence.

Collapse and Escape

Broccoli runs for the exit, reaches the ladder, and climbs two rungs at a time. She gets back into Threewells just as the shaft behind her collapses. The world shifts sideways, and a wave of what she understands as pure magic bursts through the air like an explosion. The physical collapse and the magical shock make the dungeon’s destruction visible beyond the core itself: the failure propagates through the underground space and reaches the settlement above.

The immediate aftermath is both dangerous and strangely comic. Broccoli collapses in Threewells, gasping for air, then begins laughing uncontrollably as adrenaline makes her light-headed. The laughter intensifies when the quest system announces completion and declares, "The world thanks you for your sacrifice!" The wording treats the ordeal as a formal offering even though Broccoli has survived, producing an absurd contrast between the system’s grand ceremonial language and her exhausted, involuntary reaction.

The system confirms the final result: the Wonderland Dungeon Core has been destroyed. Broccoli receives two General Points, and the event also causes her Jumping Skill to become eligible for a rank increase through repeated action. The destruction therefore carries three simultaneous outcomes: the dungeon is eliminated, the quest is completed, and Broccoli receives mechanical progression for the practical movement that allowed her to escape.

Consequences and Significance

The event completes the quest to cleanse the land by starving the Evil Root through destruction of the Dungeon Core. Its logic is harsher than a straightforward purification ritual. The root cannot be removed by force, and the dungeon cannot be preserved while the corruption remains attached to its sustaining center. Cleansing consequently requires the destruction of the place that contains and supports the evil.

The event also reveals the double function of the quest system. Its prompts identify the problem, revise the objective when Broccoli’s first solution fails, warn her of the dungeon’s collapse, and distribute rewards afterward. The system is both an interface for information and an authority that frames the destruction as sacrifice, completion, and advancement. Broccoli acts under its guidance, but the danger remains concrete: the reward arrives only after she has chosen a solution that could have killed her.

Within the broader pattern of the Wonderland Dungeon, the core’s destruction closes a chain of unstable revelations. The dungeon contains familiar but altered Wonderland imagery, including the poisoned cake, the royal decrees of the Queen of Hearts, and the level-five Zombie of Cheshire. Yet the final threat is not simply another boss to defeat. It is a rooted system of corruption tied to the dungeon’s foundation. By breaking the core rather than conquering the dungeon as a functioning place, Broccoli ends the dungeon’s existence and returns to Threewells with the land-cleansing quest fulfilled.
