Hyperborea

Conan the Barbarian

Hyperborea is a northern land of the Hyborian Age, a region of bleak plains and dark repute that stands as a stark threshold in Conan's early life. Known to lie east of Asgard, it is a country of tall, lean, light-haired people, reputed to be wizards and sorcerers. For the young Cimmerian, Hyperborea is not a destination but a passage—a brutal proving ground where he first learns the art of the blade, where his master dies, and where he takes his first steps toward the freedom and adventure that will define him. Its harsh landscape and fearsome inhabitants mark it as a land of trial, a place where the weak are broken and the strong are forged, setting the stage for the barbarian's emergence as a warrior of note.

Geography and Reputation

Hyperborea is described as a land lying east of Asgard, a northern realm whose people are tall, lean, and light-haired, and who are widely feared as wizards and sorcerers. This reputation for arcane power colors every encounter Conan has with them, from his first glimpse of a Hyperborean slave at the Wheel of Pain to his later battles in the Pit. The land itself is characterized by bleak plains, a stark and unforgiving terrain that mirrors the harshness of its people. It is a place of cold and desolation, far removed from the lush kingdoms of the south, and its very geography seems to breed a hard, formidable race. The Hyperboreans' skill in sorcery is not merely a rumor; it is a defining trait that makes them dangerous foes, and Conan's early experiences with them are marked by a sense of otherworldly threat.

The Pit and the Journey to Valamo

Hyperborea is the setting for one of Conan's most significant early trials: his first Pit fight against a Hyperborean warrior-woman. This encounter, which takes place during his time as a Pit fighter under the games-master Toghrul, is a brutal lesson in combat. The woman is a formidable opponent, and the fight leaves Conan scarred, a welled scum along his brow etched by her sword, one of several scars that mark his face and body that summer. Though he wins, the experience reveals his lack of refinement in the martial arts, a weakness that worries Toghrul. Fearing his champion will one day be pitted against a swordsman of comparable strength but superior skill, Toghrul decides to invest in Conan's training. As autumn paints the forests red and gold, Toghrul takes his troupe far to the east, across the bleak plains of Hyperborea to a town called Valamo, near the farthest reaches of that land. There, he intends to hire a master swordsman to teach the Cimmerian more skilful handling of his blade, and to buy potential Pit fighters in the local slave market, as death has thinned his troupe to half its former number.

The two-month journey to Valamo is a spectacle in itself. At every stopping place, first the Æsir and later the Hyperboreans gather to admire Toghrul's champion, who has become famous for his exploits and gigantic strength. The Pit master, a showman to the core, strips the young barbarian and displays him naked on a revolving platform from which four iron chains extend upward to the slave collar he wears. Nordheimers and their women gladly pay their copper coins to stare with curious, appraising eyes at Conan's magnificent physique. Conan returns their stares with stolid indifference, determined to deny them even the small pleasure of witnessing his arousal by the seductive smiles and sidelong glances of the women. He hates them all, a cold fury that hardens his resolve and deepens his contempt for the civilization that treats him as a spectacle.

The Earthquake at Kolari

It is in Hyperborea, at the town of Kolari, that Conan's life takes a decisive turn. While staying in a cave with a local girl, Conan's savage instincts warn him of impending danger. The animal kingdom cries out in warning—dogs bark, horses whinny, asses bray, and restless cattle low in their pastures. Suddenly, the earth shakes, a muffled moan within the ground swells to a rumbling roar, and the ground cracks open. A stream of rocks cascades down the hillside past the entrance to the cave. The girl wakes, screaming, and fumbles for her lover, but Conan, fully clad, is crouching on the cave floor, his outstretched arms braced against the stone wall as the ground heaves and shakes beneath him. Huddled there, he recalls the legends his father told him about giants in the earth and wonders whether some of them, astir, are causing the catastrophe. The rumble increases in volume until Conan has to shout to the trembling girl, urging her to join him. From Kolari comes a continuing ululation of screams as terror-stricken people rush from their tumbling houses. Behind Conan and the girl, a section of the cave roof collapses with a thunderous roar, filling the air with rock dust. In the chaos, Toghrul is killed, and Conan is freed from his servitude, a liberation born of catastrophe and the death of his master.

A Threshold to the Wider World

Hyperborea serves as the final barrier between Conan's life of slavery and the wider world of adventure. It is after the earthquake and Toghrul's death that Conan, now free, begins his journey southward, eventually reaching the border of Zamora with his new companion Subotai. The bleak plains of Hyperborea, with their harsh people and reputation for sorcery, stand in stark contrast to the fabled riches and decadent civilization of Zamora, a land of shadowed secrets, furtive spies, profound philosophers, depraved kings, and sloe-eyed women. In that darkling land, each traveller hopes to find that which he seeks: Conan, the meaning of the twisted snakes upholding a black sun; Subotai, wealth that could be his for the taking. Hyperborea, then, is not merely a place on a map but a crucible. It is where Conan's raw strength is tempered into skill, where his hatred of his oppressors is crystallized, and where the chains of his past are finally broken, allowing him to step into the legendary destiny that awaits him in the south. The land's desolation and its people's coldness are the last remnants of the brutal world that forged him, a world he leaves behind but never fully escapes.
