Turan

Conan the Barbarian

Turan is a powerful eastern kingdom of the Hyborian Age, a land defined by its vast wealth, bustling trade, and formidable military presence. It is a realm of caravans laden with the riches of distant lands, a place where the fabled pearls of Khosala, gems from the iron hills of Vendhya, and the heady wines of Shem change hands. For Conan, Turan is more than a geographical neighbor; it is a symbol of the civilized world's opulence and a recurring point of reference in his journey from slavery to kingship, a land whose wealth and power stand in stark contrast to the harsh simplicity of his native Cimmeria.

A Land of Riches and Trade

Turan's identity is inextricably linked to its position as a crossroads of commerce. As Subotai explains to Conan on the border of Zamora, the kingdom's territory begins if one follows the river eastward a few leagues. This location places Turan at the heart of a vast trading network, where all the caravans of the world converge. The land is a source of immense wealth, its markets offering spiced fruits and other exotic goods that are prized throughout the Hyborian world. The sheer scale of this prosperity is such that Subotai, upon seeing the Eye of the Serpent, exclaims that with such a gem, "We could buy an emirate in Turan with it." This casual remark underscores the kingdom's immense economic power, where even a single province is a prize of staggering value, a measure of wealth that a thief from the west can only dream of.

A Place of Exile and Return

For Conan, Turan is also a land of exile and a marker of his transformation. After leaving Shadizar, he travels far to the east, picking his way through a pass in the Kezankian Mountains where the foothills reach the stone-strewn steppe of northernmost Turan. This is not the journey of a penniless runaway slave, but of a man who has grown in power and purpose. He is now clad in fine raiment and mesh-mail, bearing a steel cap and the ancient sword he took from a skeleton's cave, now whetted to a razor edge. This return to the edge of Turan signifies his evolution from a victim of circumstance to a deliberate agent of vengeance, a man who has left the chaotic world of Zamora behind to pursue his own grim destiny.

A Contrast to the West

The kingdom serves as a crucial counterpoint to the other lands Conan encounters. While Zamora is depicted as a place of "shadowed secrets" and "splendid sin," Turan is presented as a more straightforward, albeit still foreign, power. The narrative's focus on Turan's trade and military strength, rather than its decadence, creates a distinction between the two eastern realms. Turan represents a more conventional, imperial form of power, one built on commerce and conquest, whereas Zamora is a den of thieves and cults. This contrast is further highlighted by the presence of turbaned Turanians in the bustling streets of Shadizar, a visual reminder of the different cultures that orbit the Hyborian world's center. Turan, in this sense, is a stable, wealthy, and powerful entity, a foil to the chaotic and morally corrupt states of the west, and a benchmark of the civilized world that Conan both despises and must navigate.
