Crazy Mama: 9 Steps to a Not-So-Normal Life

Arizona appears in the author’s recollection as a desert environment whose heat and sandy ground proved inhospitable to azaleas. The failed planting turns the state into a concrete example of a broader lesson: even good seed or plants may not thrive when placed in unsuitable soil.

Setting and Recollection

After living in South Carolina for her entire life, the author moved to Arizona and planted azaleas around her house. The plants were killed in a short time by the scorching desert sun and soaring temperatures. Though the azaleas themselves were good plants, they had been placed in desert sand and could not take root successfully.

Role in the Sowing Lesson

The recollection introduces the rule to plant in good soil. Its practical contrast—azaleas suited to growth, but planted in conditions that defeated them—makes the surrounding teaching about sowing and reaping tangible. A parable about seed likewise distinguishes between places where seed cannot take root and grow; the Arizona episode brings that principle into the author’s own experience.
