Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services Department

Crimson Lake

The Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services Department appears as a point of inquiry in Ted Conkaffey’s search for answers about Jake Scully. Its public counter brings him into contact with a receptionist and an older woman who recognizes him and offers help, turning a guarded request into a conversation about Jake’s case.

Setting and First Contact

Ted follows the hospital’s corridors to the department’s front counter, at the end of a long passage with sticky brown linoleum. A young receptionist is behind the counter, while an older woman stands with her back to him, completing a sign-in sheet. The scene presents the department through its reception area rather than through any account of its forensic work or internal organization.

Ted’s Inquiry

At the counter, Ted gives the name Ted Collins and asks to speak with someone about the Jake Scully case. When the receptionist asks whether he is with the police, he says he is not exactly; asked which agency he represents, he backs away. He is unsure how to explain his presence and worries that the receptionist may recognize him or call someone about his visit.

Assistance and Narrative Role

The older woman intervenes, reassures the receptionist, and tells Ted she can help. She leads him back along the corridor toward the front of the hospital, where they sit at an outdoor table. In a later exchange, Ted asks Valerie Gratteur what she can tell him about Jake, and she answers that Jake is dead. The department’s role in the story is therefore limited but consequential: it is where Ted’s attempt to make discreet inquiries brings him to a person who supplies a stark answer about the case.
