The Kissing Point abuse and Lauren Freeman’s death

Crimson Lake

The Kissing Point abuse and Lauren Freeman’s death is the night a deceptive invitation drew Amanda Pharrell to a secluded clearing, where Lauren Freeman helped two police officers exploit her. For twelve-year-old Dynah Freeman, the event exposes the gulf between her sister’s promise of friendship and the violence concealed behind it; for Amanda, the attempt to control and photograph her ends in Lauren’s death. The scene is recalled through Dynah’s perspective, with fear, hesitation, and an effort to intervene shaping how the violence unfolds and is remembered.

The invitation and the concealed plan

On the drive toward Kissing Point, Dynah already feels sick about what is coming. She knows the meeting is connected to the Special Project, but sees Amanda, who has been asking questions about the supposed party, as an ill-suited recruit. Dynah’s own nervousness makes her want to withdraw; she folds her arms and tries to focus on the rainforest outside rather than the encounter ahead. Her unease contrasts with Amanda’s excitement and with Lauren’s practiced efforts to make the plan sound like an opportunity.

Lauren’s manner matters to Dynah because it recalls how Lauren first persuaded her to take part: sweetly and gently, as if asking a small favor while giving the other person something valuable. Dynah recognizes that this apparent generosity disguises a trap. At the clearing, Lauren announces that she has brought Amanda a dress, then asks Dynah to retrieve the Lauren Freeman Case Taped Myer Bag from the car. Dynah knows that it contains no dress, only an old blanket packed inside to give the bag shape. The lie has become a physical object, while Amanda, still anticipating the party, does not know what it conceals.

The officers’ arrival and the assault

Lou Damford and Steven Hench emerge from the trees in patrol uniforms. Dynah knows Lou is Lauren’s boyfriend: earlier that day she had overheard Lauren speaking to him on the kitchen phone and seen her write his initials on a chalkboard before quickly rubbing them away. The relationship had seemed thrilling to Dynah, partly because Lou was a grown man and a police officer. Lauren had even suggested that Dynah might someday date Lou’s friend Steve. At the clearing, that apparent glamour gives way to the officers’ use of their authority in a scheme Lauren describes as a special project.

Lauren tells Amanda that Lou is her boyfriend and asks her to cooperate, presenting the request as a favor that will make them friends. Amanda continues to believe they are going to a party and asks about it as the deception closes around her. Lauren reassures her that they will go afterward. Steve then orders Amanda to remove her pants and says she is to lie down while they take photographs. Lou directs that the car’s interior be used for light. The officers’ uniforms and Lauren’s assurances do not make the situation safe; they help disguise coercion as an organized plan.

The photograph is taken while Amanda is struggling with the men. Steve restrains her, and the flash briefly illuminates the clearing. Dynah is crying and cannot bring herself to watch closely. Afterward she sees Steve touch her ear and recoils. Lou praises the photographs and asks whether Amanda will stay quiet, making clear that the images are intended to obtain money. Lauren tries to minimize the plan, telling Dynah that no one will be hurt and that Lou is smart. Her reassurance sits against what Dynah has witnessed and does nothing to dispel her fear for Amanda.

Dynah’s intervention and Lauren’s death

When Steve offers to stay alone with Amanda, Dynah grabs Lauren’s arm and warns her not to leave Amanda with him. Lauren insists that she would not hurt Amanda, but the response does not address Dynah’s concern about Steve. Lou takes Dynah by the wrist and urges the group to leave, using Steve’s position as a police officer as reassurance. Dynah refuses to go and runs back toward the car, despite Lauren’s anger and demand that she leave the situation alone.

Dynah finds Steve leaning into the car over Amanda. She kicks him and pulls at his hips in an attempt to stop him. Lauren grabs Dynah and pushes her away; Steve shoves her down, and Lou reaches for her. In the confusion, Amanda gets free and takes the Knife in the Lauren Freeman Case from the seat. She stabs Lauren, but Dynah’s later understanding is that Amanda was not aiming at her sister: she struck the first person her body encountered as she rose from beneath Steve. The distinction is central to the scene. Lauren dies, but the narration presents the stabbing as an unintended result of Amanda’s desperate escape, not as a deliberate attack on Lauren.

For a moment, Dynah cannot hear the people around her. When sound returns, Steve is distraught at the sight of Lauren on the ground. Lou throws Amanda against the car, knocks the knife from her hand, picks it up, and tells Steve to run, taking Dynah with him, while he stays to clean up. The instruction reveals the officers’ immediate priority: conceal what happened rather than protect Amanda or account for Lauren’s death. The episode thus turns the authority represented by their uniforms into part of the threat.

Consequences and significance

The event binds the three girls’ relationships to a single betrayal. Lauren had recruited Dynah and Amanda by framing participation as a privileged opportunity and friendship as its reward; at the clearing, Dynah sees that persuasion serving the officers’ plan. Her knowledge of Lauren’s relationship with Lou, once a source of fascination, becomes part of the context for understanding how Lauren drew the girls into the scheme. Dynah’s warning, attempted rescue, and inability to stop the fatal outcome leave her with a memory organized around what she feared, what she tried to do, and what happened anyway.

Amanda’s response also changes the meaning of the planned photographs. The men intend to use them to obtain money, but the attempt to control her is interrupted by her escape and Lauren’s death. The book does not present the resulting violence as a calculated choice to kill Lauren: Dynah’s recollection stresses that Amanda took the knife from the car and stabbed without aiming at her sister. Meanwhile, Lou’s order to dispose of the situation establishes his and Steve’s willingness to use police authority and then evade responsibility. At Kissing Point, the promised party, the false dress, the uniformed officers, and the camera flash all belong to one carefully staged deception; Dynah’s intervention breaks its intended course, but cannot prevent its fatal consequence.
