“I love thee! I am mad! I love, I stifle!”

Cyrano de Bergerac

“I love thee! I am mad! I love, I stifle!” is Cyrano de Bergerac’s most concentrated declaration of love to Roxane: a rush of repeated avowal that makes passion sound at once exhilarating and physically overwhelming. The line’s urgency matters because Cyrano presents it not as a polished compliment but as feeling breaking past the control of composition.

A declaration without ornament

Cyrano says he would give Roxane everything that came to him, flinging the words together “In a wild cluster, not a careful bouquet.” The image distinguishes abundance from arrangement: he claims no measured sequence of elegant phrases, only an uncontrolled outpouring. The declaration’s repetition enacts that claim. “I love” returns after “I am mad,” while “I stifle” gives the feeling a bodily limit, as though the repeated confession cannot relieve its pressure.

Love made bodily and visible

The surrounding speech extends the line beyond an abstract avowal. Cyrano says Roxane’s name is in his heart as in a sheep-bell and that he trembles when he thinks of her. He also describes his vision after leaving her presence: everything bears a blonde stain. The images make love recurrent and involuntary—sounding within him, moving through his body, and coloring what he sees. They give the declaration an afterlife beyond the instant in which it is spoken.

Roxane’s recognition and its effect

Roxane responds, “Why, this is love indeed!” Her answer recognizes the feeling expressed in Cyrano’s words, turning his unrestrained speech into something she can name. Cyrano then says that each glance of hers awakens virtue and a new, unknown valor in him, and asks whether she is beginning to understand him. The exchange joins avowal to consequence: his love is not only a confession but, in his account, a force that changes how he acts. The line’s directness stands against his earlier image of words as an unarranged cluster, making emotional exposure—not verbal polish—the measure of its force.
