Born Broken

Daisy Jones & the Six

Born Broken is a song rooted in Billy Dunne’s sense of himself as damaged and in the steadiness he found in Camila Dunne. Its title condenses that contrast into a personal refrain, while an early performance on tour connects the song’s intimate origin to the practical demands of playing as a band.

Origin and Personal Meaning

Billy traced the song’s lyrics to the difference he perceived between himself and Camila. He described her as content and whole, while he had long thought of himself as born broken. The title therefore names Billy’s own account of his identity, not Camila’s: she serves as the contrast through which he recognized and gave language to that self-image.

That contrast belongs to a larger change in Billy’s life after meeting Camila. He said she made the world make sense and helped him like himself more. She attended rehearsals and offered useful notes on his new material; her calmness gave him a sense that things would be all right. Against that reassurance, Born Broken carries the tension between Billy’s damaged self-conception and the wholeness he associated with her.

Performance on Tour

The song was part of The Six’s set when the band began its tour in Santa Rosa. At the show at Inn of the Beginning, Billy reversed two verses of Born Broken, while Graham Dunne entered late on a bridge. The band’s first tour performance went poorly because its members were not in sync, and both Billy and Graham were visibly upset afterward.

The mistakes do not alter the song’s stated personal origin, but they place it in a less private setting: a piece drawn from Billy’s self-understanding had to hold together as shared performance. Its appearance in the opening show also gives the song a concrete role in the band’s touring repertoire, where even familiar material could falter when the musicians were out of step.
