Pete Announces He'll Leave After the Tour
Daisy Jones & the SixPete’s announcement that he will leave the band after the tour turns a private engagement into a larger break with the life he has been living. Recalled by Eddie, the episode unfolds across two conversations: first, Pete mentions wanting to marry Jenny Manes; later, after she has accepted his proposal, he reveals that he intends to quit. What initially sounds to Eddie like ordinary news about a bandmate’s marriage becomes the disclosure of a long-standing, if repeatedly ignored, desire to move on.
The News Begins at Sound Check
In New Orleans in fall 1978, Pete finds Eddie at sound check and tells him that Jenny wants to get married. Eddie’s answer is immediate and practical: “All right, so marry her.” At this point, he treats the news as a decision about Pete’s relationship, not a change in the band. The brevity of the exchange matters: Eddie sees no reason marriage should affect their work together, and Pete has not yet told him that it will.
The conversation continues over the holidays. Pete asks Jenny to marry him, and she says yes. Eddie is genuinely happy for his brother and gives him a big hug. Pete, however, is anxious about telling everyone; Eddie misunderstands what he is worried about and assures him that nobody will care if he is married. Pete’s reply—“No, I’m leaving.”—recasts the engagement as the opening to news Eddie had not expected.
The Decision to Quit
Pete specifies that he will leave at the end of the tour. The timing makes the decision a departure rather than an immediate abandonment of the band: he intends to finish the tour, but not to continue beyond it. Eddie’s repetition of the question—“Leaving?”—registers the distance between his own assumptions and Pete’s plans. In the den at their parents’ house, he presses him about quitting, while Pete says that he has told Eddie before that he did not want to do this forever.
Eddie rejects that account, saying he never heard it. Pete answers that he has said it “a thousand times” and that the work does not matter to him in the way Eddie assumes. Their disagreement is not simply about whether Pete has mentioned leaving; it is about whether Eddie has recognized what those earlier statements meant. For Eddie, the band’s life is something worth holding on to. Pete presents it as a passage he has been willing to travel for a while, not as a permanent destination.
Jenny, the Band, and Pete’s Own Future
Eddie initially interprets Pete’s choice as giving up the band for Jenny and asks whether that is really what he is doing. Pete rejects the framing: “Not really for Jenny. For me. So I can get on with my life.” His engagement and his departure are connected in the sequence of events, but he does not describe marriage as the reason for quitting. He identifies the decision instead as a choice about his own future.
Pete makes that distinction concrete by saying he never wanted to be in a soft rock band. He describes having “got on the train” and ridden it for a while, then says his stop is approaching. The image frames the band’s success and touring not as a failed venture but as a temporary route whose end he can see. The announcement therefore changes the meaning of the earlier wedding news: Jenny’s acceptance is part of Pete’s new life, but, in his account, leaving is not a sacrifice made for her.
A Departure Already in Motion
The event closes on a firm intention rather than a completed exit. Pete says he will quit after the tour; the evidence establishes his decision and its timing, not the details of his eventual departure. Eddie’s recollection preserves the emotional pivot from uncomplicated congratulations to disbelief, and it places that pivot in an ordinary family setting rather than onstage: a conversation in their parents’ den about what the band means, and what it does not mean, to each brother.
Pete’s explanation also distinguishes persistence from commitment. He has stayed with the band and will finish the tour, yet insists that neither fact obliges him to make it his whole life. For Eddie, the news is a sudden rupture; for Pete, it is the approaching stop on a journey he had never meant to take forever.
