Phuket

Daisy Jones & the Six

Phuket is the setting of a short but consequential passage in Daisy Jones’s account of her time in Thailand: a trip intended for solitude quickly gives way to restlessness and a meeting with Nicky. The island enters the story through both a postcard to Simone Jackson and Daisy’s recollection of an encounter beside a pool overlooking the water.

Arrival and Disappointment

Daisy says she went to Thailand hoping to decompress and reflect on herself. That plan did not last. Two days into the trip, she was already going stir-crazy and came close to booking a flight home five days ahead of schedule. Phuket therefore belongs to a journey that does not deliver the quiet self-examination Daisy expected; her account instead emphasizes how quickly solitude became unbearable.

The Postcard and the Encounter

Simone was in Manhattan when Daisy’s postcard arrived from Thailand. Its invitation was blunt and playful: “Come to Phuket. Bring coke and lipstick.” Daisy’s recollection then shifts to meeting Nicky. She describes herself lying outside by a pool, looking over the water and high, when a tall, elegant-looking man came out smoking a cigarette. Because she disliked smelling smoke unless she was smoking herself, she asked him to put it out. He challenged her assumption that being gorgeous entitled her to get what she wanted, speaking with what she remembered as a fabulous Italian accent; Daisy answered that it did.

Narrative Significance

Phuket’s significance rests on the contrast between Daisy’s stated intention to be alone and the invitation and encounter that redirect the episode. The postcard makes the trip social before Daisy’s account reaches Nicky, while the exchange at the pool introduces their dynamic through a brief contest over entitlement and desire. The setting is conveyed through a few concrete details—the pool, the water, and the cigarette—rather than an extended description of the island, keeping attention on Daisy’s changing purpose for being there.
