Troubadour
Daisy Jones & the SixThe Troubadour is remembered as the site of one of Billy’s band’s strongest early shows and the first meeting there between the group and producer Teddy Price. Rod Reyes arranged the performance as the band began attracting attention; Teddy’s presence in the audience turned a successful night onstage into an opportunity for the band to be noticed by Runner Records.
A Show as the Band Gained Attention
Rod Reyes set up the Troubadour show once the band was beginning to receive good attention. The venue therefore enters the story at a moment when the group had moved beyond simply trying to be heard: its live performance was becoming a way to reach industry figures as well as audiences.
The Performance and Teddy Price’s Arrival
The band played “Farther from You,” a song whose emotional force was apparent in Billy’s singing. Karen Karen recalled looking across at her bandmates as the performance unfolded: Karen was absorbed in playing, while Billy sang with an intensity that made the show feel like their best yet. The venue’s importance rests partly in this collective moment of confidence, not just in what happened afterward.
Teddy Price was listening from the back of the room. He had heard the band at P.J.’s through his assistant and had come to hear them for himself. After the show, he approached Rod, who introduced him to Billy. Teddy singled out Billy’s talent for writing about a girl, recognizing the emotional directness that Karen had already sensed in Billy’s performance. The meeting brought a Runner Records producer into direct contact with the band at the very moment its live work was making an impression.
Discovery and Retrospective Significance
The Troubadour show linked performance to professional attention: Rod had arranged the opportunity, the band delivered a set that felt like a new high point, and Teddy stayed to meet them afterward. Karen later described Billy as eager to please Teddy and to secure a record deal, capturing how quickly the producer’s presence changed the stakes of the night. The venue thus marks an early threshold in the band’s career, where musical conviction onstage and the possibility of a recording contract converged.
