Doctor Strong’s Secrecy Requirement

David Copperfield

Doctor Strong’s Secrecy Requirement is a specific request for silence, not a general rule of conduct: after confiding his private feelings about his marriage, Doctor Strong asks David Copperfield to keep their conversation secret. David honors the request until Annie’s own appeal for information leads him to decide that telling her the truth has become the more faithful course.

The Private Confidence

Doctor Strong frames his confidence as a matter of protecting Annie from cruel misinterpretation. He says that she, rather than he, has the right to reproach him, and that it is his duty to shield her from judgments even his friends have failed to avoid. He hopes they can live more privately and expresses confidence that, when his death releases her from constraint, she will have happier days. After laying out this account, he tells those present, "What we have said tonight is never to be said more." He asks Wickfield to accompany him upstairs, closing the conversation with an explicit demand for discretion.

David Keeps the Promise

David does not disclose the conversation to Agnes Wickfield, who has no suspicion of what was said. The next day, before the usual work resumes, Doctor Strong gives David a folded, unsealed note addressed to him. In a few affectionate words, it repeats the injunction never to refer to the subject of that evening. David confides the matter to his aunt, but to no one else. His silence therefore has a defined scope: he withholds the substance of the private conversation from those who might otherwise be involved, while making one trusted confidante an exception.

The Appeal That Changes the Rule

Weeks later, Annie asks anyone who knows something that could help mediate between her and her husband to speak. David recognizes that he has been earnestly asked to conceal relevant knowledge, but concludes that continuing to do so would mistake faithfulness and delicacy for a reason to prolong their estrangement. He takes Annie’s appeal as releasing him from Doctor Strong’s injunction. Without seeking Doctor Strong’s permission, he recounts what happened in the private conversation, softening the coarseness of Uriah Heep’s part but otherwise speaking plainly.

The disclosure is thus neither casual gossip nor a repudiation of Doctor Strong’s trust. David first preserves the confidence, then breaks it when Annie directly asks for information that may help restore understanding between the spouses. The rule’s force is personal and temporary: it governs David’s silence until the circumstances that gave that silence its purpose change.
