St. Mary’s Hospital
Day of the DeadSt. Mary’s Hospital becomes the critical setting for the aftermath of Erik LaGrange’s suicide attempt in jail. There, his life-support status, the discovery of his organ-donor card, and the presence of people who remain with him turn the hospital into a place where medical decisions and the unresolved murder investigation meet.
Role in the Plot
After Erik attempts suicide in his Pima County Jail cell, he is taken to St. Mary’s Hospital. Brian Fellows tells Brandon Walker that Erik is on life support, and the evening news reports that he is in guarded condition. The hospital is therefore the immediate destination of the arrested murder suspect and the setting in which the consequences of his attempt become clear.
Public Attention and Private Response
By the time Brian reaches the hospital, media personnel have gathered around its entrance, and he has to push through them to get inside. In the intensive-care waiting room, he finds PeeWee Segura, who tells him that Erik’s condition is grave and that doctors believe he is brain-dead. The news coverage has made the hospital a public focal point, but the waiting room holds a more personal uncertainty: whether Erik will regain consciousness and be able to answer questions.
Medical Decisions and Final Vigil
A physician explains to Ryan Doyle that Erik’s brain was without oxygen for too long and that life support is keeping him alive. Because Erik has no known relatives, the doctor raises the question of who can be consulted about the next steps. Erik’s organ-donor card is later found among his personal effects. Sheriff Forsythe leaves the final determination to the medical examiner’s office, while Brian understands that Ryan will stay beside Erik until blood and tissue typing is completed and the respirator is turned off.
Significance to the Investigation
The hospital’s role extends beyond the treatment of Erik’s critical condition. His attempted suicide initially makes his claim that he was framed seem less plausible, yet Brian notices Ryan’s contempt for Gayle Stryker and reconsiders whether Erik might have been telling the truth. Erik can no longer identify who else may have been in his house, so the investigation’s attention shifts toward Gayle and an unidentified fingerprint linked by AFIS to a homicide in Yuma. St. Mary’s thus marks both the limit of what Erik can tell investigators and the point at which Brian resolves to pursue another line of inquiry.
