The Fourfold Principle

Day of the Dead

The Fourfold Principle is a Tohono O’odham teaching that all things in nature follow a pattern of four. Its clearest enactment comes when Lani Walker, alarmed by a vision of Gayle Stryker, sings a protective song in the prescribed fourfold pattern. The principle joins a natural order to a lived practice: four is not just an idea she recalls, but the measure by which she gives her words power.

Form and Teaching

The principle is presented through a specific instruction: repeat the song’s four stanzas four times. Fat Crack Ortiz and Nana Dahd taught Lani this practice, grounding it in knowledge passed between teachers and a younger practitioner. The scene offers no broader catalogue of what comes in fours; instead, it makes the rule concrete through its exact structure and repetition.

The Protective Song

Lani sings in Smitty Coltharp’s grimy office while waiting for her mother’s Buick to be repaired. She has just recognized Gayle as evil, although she cannot understand Gayle’s connection to the Girl in the Box. Lani tries to warn her father by telephone, but hangs up when the voicemail prompt begins. Unable to deliver the warning, she turns to the protective words, letting them flow under her breath and repeating each stanza according to the fourfold rule.

Cosmological Significance

For Lani, the song follows a moment of spiritual interpretation. She believes Fat Crack brought Brandon Walker and the dead girl’s mother together and wonders whether, through that chain of events, I’itoi is again directing people toward the destruction of evil. The Fourfold Principle does not explain that chain; it shapes Lani’s response to the danger she perceives. Its significance lies in the movement from inherited teaching to action: with a warning left unsaid and the Buick still being repaired, she uses the pattern she was taught to sing for protection. When Smitty asks whether she is all right, she says she is fine, leaving the song’s protective force present but its outcome unresolved.
