Carrier pigeons

De brief voor de Koning

Carrier pigeons connect Dangria to distant places and carry information into the city, including a secret message whose arrival accompanies the mayor’s search for Tiuri. The birds also appear at the city wall, where their unimpeded flight contrasts with the restrictions placed on people entering Dangria.

Presence at Dangria

As Tiuri, Piak, and Ardoc approach Dangria’s eastern gate, two pigeons fly over them and the city wall, then settle on a tower. Piak remarks on the freedom of their passage. The scene does not identify these particular birds as carrier pigeons, but Ardoc’s explanation that follows establishes pigeons as a common sight in the city.

A network for messages

Ardoc explains that Dangria has many pigeons and that carrier pigeons sometimes arrive from faraway regions. The mayor receives many messages this way. The birds therefore belong not only to the city’s everyday landscape but also to a regular means of communication between Dangria and elsewhere. Ardoc visits the city every month, though the narrative does not specify whether his visits relate to the pigeon-borne messages.

The secret dispatch

The mayor’s clerk later tells Tiuri that a message had recently arrived from the east or southeast by carrier pigeon. The clerk had been forbidden to read it, and the letter was not to be kept in the archive. The mayor had also ordered gatekeepers to bring in every boy between fourteen and eighteen who entered the city, expecting Tiuri to come. The passages place the secret dispatch alongside the search, though they do not explicitly state who sent it or precisely how it prompted the mayor’s actions. The pigeons’ routine role in communication thus carries a concealed political edge: a message can reach the city, while its contents and origin remain withheld.
