Tiuri Escapes Dangria Town Hall

De brief voor de Koning

Tiuri’s escape from Dangria Town Hall is a passage from confinement into renewed flight, achieved not by force alone but by quick decisions and carefully managed deception. Trapped inside a guarded building, he chooses to move through it rather than wait for capture. His route takes him from a locked room to a hiding place, then into the path of the mayor’s clerk, whose help gets the searchers away from him. Tiuri reaches the street, but the escape is not a rescue of Piak: the clerk tells him that Piak is imprisoned below.

The decision to risk the corridors

Tiuri has reason to think escape is unlikely. The room’s window is too high above the ground, and the rope is in Piak’s bag downstairs. Even with the rope, Tiuri doubts that climbing out would work. Looking outside, he sees two guards walking through the alley and watches until they disappear around a corner. The room offers no safe way out, while staying put only postpones defeat. He decides that his chance lies in going through the door and across the town hall.

Before acting, Tiuri listens at the door. The silence outside suggests that no one may be standing there; the guards might not expect him to venture out. He treats that possibility as an opening rather than reassurance. When he eases back the bolt, he fears that the door may also be locked from the other side. It is not. He looks around the corner and finds a single guard, turned partly away from him.

Making a guarded passage

Tiuri opens the door farther and orders the guard not to turn or speak. The man reacts with a start and reaches for his sword, so Tiuri raises his bow and repeats the order, adding that the guard must put the weapon down and approach with his hands over his head. The guard obeys. Hearing voices elsewhere in the building and seeing the man’s eyes brighten, Tiuri realizes that he must hurry. He orders him into the room, shuts him inside, and takes the key.

The guard soon calls out. Tiuri is already moving through the town hall’s corridors and rooms, looking for somewhere to hide; he knows he cannot simply make his way downstairs undisturbed. A cupboard offers a brief refuge. It is unlocked, and he climbs inside and pulls the door shut. People pass through the room without looking into it. Once they have gone, Tiuri resumes his progress, eventually reaching the first floor without being noticed.

The building’s noise then closes in from above and below, making it seem that he may be trapped. Tiuri slips into a room he has not previously entered, partly hoping to hide and partly considering whether a window might offer an escape. Its table holds writing materials, and maps hang on the walls. An open door leads into another room; from there emerges the mayor’s pale, dark-haired clerk.

The clerk turns the search aside

Tiuri raises his bow again and warns the clerk not to speak. As someone outside calls for a search of the floor, Tiuri orders the clerk to go to the door and tell the searchers that he is not there. He keeps the clerk at arrow-point and insists that he remain in place, making clear that any attempt to leave will be met with violence. The clerk follows the instructions.

When he opens the door, the clerk calls to the unseen searchers and directs them toward the hall, claiming that Tiuri has gone down the stairs and should be stopped there. Tiuri hears the pursuers move away. The clerk closes the door and comes back, calmly asking whether he did it correctly; he even smiles briefly. His composure stands against the urgency of Tiuri’s escape, and his cooperation gives Tiuri a chance to continue. He also points out the danger the deception has left behind: the guards will be waiting below, so Tiuri cannot use the stairs.

Out of the building, but not out of danger

The clerk checks outside through the window before advising Tiuri to go. Soldiers pass from time to time, but, he says, Tiuri may get away if he is quick. It is already beginning to grow dusk. The clerk wishes him better luck than his friend, and Tiuri immediately asks whether Piak has been captured. The clerk confirms that Piak is being held in the dungeon below. The escape therefore brings Tiuri freedom of movement, not the release of his companion.

The clerk directs Tiuri to the rear of the town hall. Tiuri thanks him quietly and soon finds himself in the street, moving as fast as he can. When several guards appear around the corner of the building, he darts into a side street. He hears them call out and cannot tell whether they have seen him. He hurries through several streets before slowing when he notices people staring at him in surprise. Even outside the town hall, he must manage his flight without drawing attention.

He reaches the marketplace and stops in a dark doorway to consider where to go. Dangria is unfamiliar to him, and enemies are searching for him. Someone suddenly appears and whispers for him to come along. The invitation opens the next immediate possibility after his escape, but the scene ends before the stranger’s identity or intentions are disclosed.

Significance of the escape

The episode’s reversals are practical and local: a door feared to be locked opens; a guard who reaches for his sword is disarmed by the bow; a cupboard hides Tiuri while people pass; and the clerk’s false direction draws the pursuers away. Each opening is temporary, and Tiuri has to keep moving before it closes. His escape depends on reading the building and the people in it, not on finding an unguarded route downstairs.

The clerk’s assistance changes the outcome without undoing the capture of Piak. Tiuri gets out because the clerk directs the search elsewhere and shows him the rear exit, while the news about the dungeon makes clear what the escape has cost him in practical terms: he leaves his friend behind. The final appearance of an unknown guide shifts the scene from escape within the town hall to flight through the city, with Tiuri still exposed and still dependent on what others choose to do.
