Grandmother Rong’s Night Terrors

Grandmother Rong’s Night Terrors
A household troubled by dreams
Grandmother Rong’s frightening dreams disturb her despite her family’s wealth and attention. Local scholars are repeatedly invited to interpret them but fail to satisfy her.
A stranger earns trust
Mr Auslander impresses her with interpretations that seem accurate and sometimes prophetic. Dream reading enters the family’s story as a form of knowledge that conventional scholarship cannot provide.
A Child Learns to Interpret

A Child Learns to Interpret
Lessons without a classroom
Mr Auslander teaches Duckling dream interpretation alongside English-language reading. The child’s education is shaped by private attention and sustained observation rather than formal instruction.
An inner discipline
Dreams become a recurring field of inquiry for Jinzhen. His ability to interpret them later appears connected to the same patience and pattern-seeking that characterizes his mathematical work.
Dreams Enter the Unit

Dreams Enter the Unit
A private skill shared
Jinzhen interprets colleagues’ dreams when they ask, often during informal discussions. He treats their images seriously and makes sense of them without claiming ordinary professional authority.
Suspicion from ideology
A politically zealous deputy criticizes him for superstition and demands a self-criticism. Jinzhen replies that secrets, including ciphers, are hidden in dreams, turning a personal practice into an institutional conflict.
Dreaming Toward BLACK

Dreaming Toward BLACK
A deliberate experiment
Jinzhen tries to make himself dream, believing that his dream life may offer a route toward the creator of BLACK. The attempt becomes another responsibility rather than a source of rest.
The method’s cost
His dreams multiply and disrupt ordinary sleep, worsening the exhaustion he hopes they will solve. The novel leaves open whether dreams provide insight, while showing clearly that the attempt to command them has a cost.
The Notebook’s Dream Language

The Notebook’s Dream Language
Thoughts without fixed referents
The hospital notebook moves between pronouns, memories, Bible passages, images, and fragments of thought. Its reader cannot always tell whether “he” or “she” refers to another person, Jinzhen, or an imagined figure.
Meaning beyond certainty
The notebook resembles a cipher that cannot be completely resolved from outside. Its dreamlike form preserves the workings of a mind while reminding the reader that knowledge of another person remains partial.
