A Guest Among the Tribe

Hospitality Across Identity
A place at the fire
The Jurchens celebrate Xiao Feng's strength and welcome him into their chief's tent. Their communal life differs from the political hierarchy he has left behind.
A rare respite
Xiao Feng learns languages, hunts, drinks, and helps care for A'Zi. The camp briefly gives him a home where his Khitan origin does not make him an enemy.
Old Enemies Reappear

Violence Between Kin
A sudden attack
A large Khitan force attacks the Jurchen hunting party without first clarifying who they are. The old border conflict turns a hunt into a lethal confrontation.
Divided allegiance
Xiao Feng refuses to kill his own people, but also cannot abandon the Jurchens who have sheltered him. He intervenes to limit casualties on both sides.
The Commander Seized

Force Used to Prevent Massacre
A targeted maneuver
Xiao Feng breaks through the mounted force and captures its commander, Yelu Ji. He compels the Khitans to stop pursuing the Jurchen hunters.
A bond from conflict
The encounter becomes the basis of an enduring friendship. Xiao Feng's success depends on force, but his purpose is to prevent the battle from escalating.
A Return to War's Logic

The Cost of Allegiance
Political conflict expands
Xiao Feng's ties to Yelu Ji draw him into the Liao rebellion and eventually into imperial command. The refuge among the Jurchens cannot keep him outside the wars of states and peoples.
No simple homecoming
His efforts to protect individuals do not erase the machinery of conflict. He remains caught between communities whose violence follows inherited allegiance.
