Two Disciples, Different Paths

Study Divides the School
Su XingHe's breadth
Su XingHe studies music, chess, calligraphy, medicine, and other arts alongside martial knowledge. Ding Chunqiu concentrates more directly on martial power.
A divergence in ambition
Their different pursuits initially coexist, but Ding's desire for supremacy eventually turns the school's breadth into a vulnerability. The master's varied teachings do not prevent betrayal.
The Master's Defeat

A School Broken
Betrayal and injury
Ding Chunqiu attacks his master and leaves Su XingHe gravely injured. Su XingHe's disciples recognize that their martial skill cannot defeat the traitor directly.
A silent pact
Su XingHe becomes deaf and mute and expels the eight disciples, hoping to keep them beyond Ding's reach. His silence preserves them but also severs their place in the school.
The Eight Friends Scatter

Skills Outside the Sect
Separate lives
The eight disciples cultivate distinct arts, from music and chess to medicine and craft. They meet only periodically to reduce the danger that Ding Chunqiu will find them together.
Loyalty remains
Although expelled, they continue to regard Su XingHe as their teacher. Their scattered paths preserve both their specialized knowledge and their attachment to the master.
Xue MuHua's False Funeral

Refuge Concealed by Poison
A staged death
Xue MuHua fakes his death and places deadly poison in a coffin, hoping to discourage Ding Chunqiu from entering his home. He hides his family and companions in an underground refuge.
The trap fails
The ruse attracts other visitors and cannot stop Ding Chunqiu from finding him. The Eight Friends' refuge becomes the site of a confrontation with the very danger they hoped to avoid.
The Refuge Overrun

A School's Old Wound Reopened
The enemy forces entry
Ding Chunqiu uses explosives to defeat the refuge's mechanisms and subdues its defenders with poison and force. The Eight Friends cannot protect one another through specialized skills alone.
The master threatened
Ding Chunqiu coerces Xue MuHua into treating HuiJing and uses the threat against Su XingHe to secure compliance. The old betrayal continues to govern the disciples' choices.
