Feng ASan
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsFeng ASan, also identified among Su Xinghe’s disciples as the sixth brother, is a skilled carpenter whose practical knowledge becomes crucial at Xue MuHua’s inherited refuge. When Ding Chunqiu forces his way toward the cave, Feng ASan recognizes the breach, helps decide who should remain sheltered, and operates the mechanism that opens an exit. He then joins the defense outside, where Ding Chunqiu’s attack leaves him injured. His brief but consequential part in the episode links the disciples’ craft traditions to their collective attempt to resist their former fellow disciple.
Identity and Skills
Feng ASan belongs to the group of disciples associated with Su Xinghe and is referred to by Xue MuHua as his sixth martial brother. Xue describes him as already a skilled carpenter before he entered their master’s tutelage, and says that his practical ability grew further afterward. This background places him within a circle whose members possess varied crafts as well as martial knowledge: Xue also identifies Shi QingFeng as an expert in cultivating flowers and rare herbs. Feng ASan’s particular expertise is not incidental when the group takes refuge in a mechanically protected cave.
The story presents carpentry and mechanism as connected skills. Feng ASan attends to the workmanship of the refuge and its concealed means of access, while other disciples explain that mechanisms and traps are among the group’s specialties. His role is therefore both technical and communal: he can assess the cave as a built structure, and he can put its mechanism to use when its occupants need to leave it.
The Ancestral Cave Under Threat
As Ding Chunqiu’s followers approach, Feng ASan examines the markings in the wood and the quality of the stone and estimates that the cave is about three hundred years old. Xue MuHua explains that the property has passed down through his family from generation to generation and can serve as a refuge in danger, although he does not know who originally built it. The exchange brings together two different kinds of knowledge: Xue’s family inheritance explains why the cave is available, while Feng ASan’s craft lets him read clues in its construction.
The refuge’s age and inherited purpose do not make it invulnerable. When a great explosion shakes the ground, Feng ASan immediately understands that Ding Chunqiu has used explosives to break open the entrance. His rapid recognition turns the sound into actionable information: the attackers are no longer merely threatening the hidden group from outside but are forcing their way into the protected space. Kang GuangLing condemns the destruction as an affront to the group’s mechanical tradition, since Ding Chunqiu has chosen to blow the entrance apart rather than solve its mechanism.
Organizing the Defense
With the entrance under attack, Feng ASan proposes that Xue MuHua’s family, Bao BuTong, and Feng BoE remain in the cave. He explains that their injuries would make fighting difficult, framing the decision as a practical division of roles rather than a judgment on their courage. Bao BuTong rejects the suggestion, insisting that severe injuries would only give him more energy to fight; the others shake their heads at his refusal to be reasoned with. The exchange shows Feng ASan trying to preserve the strength of the group by keeping its injured members out of the first clash.
Feng ASan then operates the cave’s mechanism. Three cannon shots sound while he works it, and only after the explosions does the stone slab move aside, exposing a passage large enough for one person. He crawls out first. The sequence makes his practical skill a hinge between concealment and action: the cave has kept the group out of sight, but the mechanism Feng ASan operates allows its defenders to emerge when the shelter is compromised.
The Fight and Its Consequences
Feng ASan has scarcely stood up when Feng BoE rushes through the smoke and challenges Ding Chunqiu’s followers. Feng BoE strikes at one of the Xingxiu Sect disciples, but the poison affecting him has weakened his attacks, and he cannot bring his opponent down. XuanNan, Deng BaiChuan, Kang GuangLing, and Xue MuHua also come out of the cave, turning Feng ASan’s opening of the passage into the group’s entry into the confrontation.
Ding Chunqiu then sends flames from his sleeves toward Kang GuangLing and four others, sparing Xue MuHua. Kang GuangLing and XuanNan manage to deflect some of the attack, but Feng ASan and Fan BaiLing are struck. Feng ASan’s work has helped the group leave the cave and meet the assault together; it does not secure their safety once they are exposed to Ding Chunqiu’s greater force. His episode thus ends not in triumph but in the cost of joining the defense, with the refuge’s protective mechanisms giving way to an open and dangerous confrontation.
Narrative Role
Feng ASan’s actions make a craft tradition materially useful at the moment it is tested. The cave is both an inherited shelter and a structure that can be operated: first its age and hidden construction offer refuge, then explosives defeat its entrance, and finally its internal mechanism provides a route out. Feng ASan reads, manages, and activates that structure. His carpentry is not presented as a substitute for combat; rather, it enables the group to move from hiding to resistance, after which the conflict exposes the limits of technical preparation against Ding Chunqiu’s attack.
