Kunlun Mountains
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsKunlun Mountain is the remote origin of the Frost Silkworm, a rare creature whose unusual effects draw rival seekers across great distances. Though the mountain itself is not shown directly in these episodes, reports of its scale and the silkworm’s journey make it a powerful offstage source of danger, knowledge, and pursuit.
Setting and Reach
The mountain is described as extending for thousands of li, a vastness that makes searching for the Frost Silkworm difficult without someone who knows the terrain. Its distance is measured not just in geography but in the effort required to travel from the Xingxiu Sea and the Central Plains in pursuit of the creature.
A monk at MinZhong Temple says he brought the silkworm from Kunlun Mountain. When You TanZhi later encounters the creature near the temple, its earlier home becomes part of the chain of events connecting the mountain to places far away.
The Frost Silkworm and Its Pursuers
The Frost Silkworm’s origin gives it exceptional value. Ding Chunqiu says that he spent considerable effort capturing one on Kunlun Mountain, and considers its effects more valuable even than the Divine Wood King Cauldron. Learning that Monk HuiJing had handled the creature, Ding resolves to capture him and make him guide a new expedition to the mountain, reasoning that where one silkworm came from, others might be found.
The pursuit also puts Ding and HuiJing at odds over who found and captured the silkworm. Ding claims it as the object he had caught and lost; HuiJing insists that he had discovered it himself through painstaking effort at Kunlun Mountain. The mountain’s remoteness thus fuels both the prospect of further captures and a dispute over possession of the one creature already found.
Consequences Beyond the Mountain
The silkworm’s effects persist after it leaves Kunlun Mountain. Its cold poison has penetrated HuiJing’s inner organs, and Xue MuHua treats him with acupuncture, moxibustion, and medicine. The creature’s history therefore links a distant landscape to the medical crisis at Xue MuHua’s refuge.
For You TanZhi, the encounter with the Frost Silkworm becomes a turning point in his martial development. Ding attributes his unusual cold internal energy to the creature’s effect, though You conceals details of his martial practice. Kunlun Mountain is consequently more than a far-off point of origin: through the silkworm, it sets characters in motion and leaves consequences in their bodies, ambitions, and conflicts.
