Mu Wanqing
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsMu Wanqing is Qin Hongmian’s daughter and Duan Zhengchun’s child, a young woman whose family ties draw her into the rivalries surrounding her father while her own feelings remain fixed on Duan Yu. At Little Mirror Lake, she arrives armed and ready to confront Ruan Xingzhu, then leaves with her mother; afterward, her concealed grief over Duan Yu gives the family conflict a quieter, more personal undertow.
Identity and Family Background
Mu Wanqing is the daughter of Qin Hongmian and Duan Zhengchun. Her mother’s anger is directed less at Duan Zhengchun’s succession of love affairs than at the women she regards as rivals who have taken him from her. When Qin Hongmian learns that he has another lover, Ruan Xingzhu, living in seclusion beside Little Mirror Lake, she sets out with Mu Wanqing to kill her. The mission places the daughter beside her mother in a conflict rooted in their father’s relationships, although the account does not show Mu Wanqing choosing the feud as her own.
At Ruan Xingzhu’s home, Mu Wanqing is identified as the young woman in black. She carries a steel saber, and Ruan Xingzhu recognizes Qin Hongmian by the broken saber on the floor and the pair of weapons associated with her fighting style. The confrontation turns on the identities and relationships concealed beneath the women’s hostile words: Ruan Xingzhu is another of Duan Zhengchun’s lovers, while Mu Wanqing is his daughter.
The Encounter at Little Mirror Lake
During the meeting, Mu Wanqing accuses Ruan Xingzhu of making her mother suffer and harming her. She is unable to move, however, and cannot avoid A'Zi’s attempted slap. Ruan Xingzhu intervenes, restrains A'Zi, and then recognizes Qin Hongmian. The encounter is not resolved by force: Ruan Xingzhu speaks tactfully to her rival, and the enmity between the two women eases enough for them to talk.
Xiao Feng subsequently releases Mu Wanqing and Qin Hongmian by tapping their shoulders and using his internal energy to unblock their acupuncture points. Both women regain free movement and are impressed by the depth of his internal strength. Xiao Feng then addresses Mu Wanqing as Miss Duan and warns her against using her poisonous missiles, explaining that they might harm her if she faced a more skilled opponent. As he departs, he sends the seven short arrows she had earlier shot at him flying back toward A'Zi; they pass close by A'Zi and lodge in the wall. The demonstration gives Mu Wanqing a practical warning about her weapons while showing the difference between their danger and Xiao Feng’s control of them.
Mother, Father, and a Hidden Meeting
After the conversation at Ruan Xingzhu’s home, Qin Hongmian and Mu Wanqing leave, but they return in black clothing and conceal themselves nearby. Qin Hongmian has discovered a pair of men’s shoes beneath the couch in Ruan Xingzhu’s bedroom. The shoes are new, their soles still muddy, and their embroidered toes bear the words “Mountain” and “River”; Qin Hongmian recognizes them as Duan Zhengchun’s and concludes that he must be close. The detail exposes Ruan Xingzhu’s attempt to keep the women from meeting him, and the mother and daughter decide to wait for his arrival rather than accept that they have been turned away.
Qin Hongmian admits that she wants to see Duan Zhengchun but does not want to meet him. She reflects that they have been apart for many days and are both growing old. Mu Wanqing agrees, but her response is sorrowful. Since parting from Duan Yu, she has found herself thinking of him more and more; she understands that this love has no future and does not dare reveal the weight of it to her mother. Her silence distinguishes her private attachment from the older generation’s visible rivalry over Duan Zhengchun.
Relationships and Narrative Role
Mu Wanqing’s relationships place her at the intersection of two generations of affection and conflict. Qin Hongmian is both her mother and her companion in the effort to confront Duan Zhengchun’s other lover. Duan Zhengchun is the father whose divided attachments have brought Qin Hongmian and Ruan Xingzhu into conflict. Duan Yu, by contrast, is the object of Mu Wanqing’s unspoken longing: she remembers him increasingly after their separation but keeps that sorrow from her mother.
The episode also sets Mu Wanqing beside A'Zi, whose impulsive hostility prompts Ruan Xingzhu’s intervention, and Xiao Feng, whose restraint ends the immediate physical confrontation. Mu Wanqing’s inability to move, her release, and the returned arrows form a brief sequence in which the threat of violence is present but does not determine the encounter’s final direction. Her later decision to wait with Qin Hongmian for Duan Zhengchun keeps her within the family’s unresolved tensions, while her concealed feelings for Duan Yu reveal a more inward conflict that the others do not address.
