Su XingHe—Kang GuangLing
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsSu XingHe—Kang GuangLing is a teacher-and-disciple relationship shaped by the unusual breadth of Su XingHe’s instruction: alongside martial arts, he taught Kang GuangLing the zither, a skill that later marked the disciple’s place among the Eight Friends of Hangu.
Master and Senior Disciple
Kang GuangLing was the most senior of Su XingHe’s eight apprentices. When Xue MuHua identified Su XingHe as their master, he explained that Su XingHe had taught his disciples additional skills as well as martial arts. Kang GuangLing’s particular study was the zither, learned directly from Su XingHe.
The Zither as Part of Su XingHe’s Teaching
The zither belonged to a wider pattern of instruction. Su XingHe’s eight disciples each acquired a distinct additional skill, and he encouraged them in these pursuits, taking time to teach them. Kang GuangLing’s musical training therefore reflects the breadth of Su XingHe’s mentorship rather than a separate association. Xue MuHua later recounted that Su XingHe himself had turned to music and zither under their grandmaster’s guidance.
Skill, Reputation, and Discipleship
Kang GuangLing’s musical ability became a point of playful dispute when Xue MuHua told the story of the disciples’ training. Bao BuTong mocked his playing, but Kang GuangLing answered by taking out his jade zither and preparing to play. The exchange places their master-disciple bond in a social setting: the zither is both evidence of Su XingHe’s personal teaching and a distinctive accomplishment through which Kang GuangLing is recognized. The account establishes the training and its lasting association with Kang GuangLing, but does not describe the original lessons or assess his musical proficiency.
