Throat-Lock Capturing Technique

Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils

The Throat-Lock Capturing Technique is a martial art identified as the Ma family’s supreme skill, a family marker so exclusive that its appearance in a darkened encounter immediately points toward Ma Dayuan. In the scene, the technique functions both as a physical threat and as evidence: Bai Shijing recognizes it, fears what it implies, and ultimately reveals the murder conspiracy involving himself and Madam Ma.

Identity and Family Significance

Bai Shijing understands that the technique is not merely a powerful method of combat. He knows it as the supreme skill of Ma Dayuan’s family, which, as he understands the matter, no one outside that family can use. His long friendship with Ma Dayuan has made him familiar with the family’s martial arts, so the technique carries the force of a recognizable signature.

That exclusivity gives the art its particular importance in the encounter. Bai Shijing is not primarily afraid of the opponent’s strength; he is alarmed because the use of the technique suggests a connection to Ma Dayuan. The possibility that the figure is Ma Dayuan, whom Bai Shijing believes to have been killed, transforms a confrontation into an apparent return of the dead.

The Technique in the Encounter

The tall, silent figure has already used the technique against Bai Shijing, leaving him aware of a slight pain in his neck. Unable to make out the figure’s appearance in the darkness, Bai Shijing asks whether the stranger’s surname is Ma. The figure gives no answer. The silence leaves the recognition unresolved, allowing the technique itself to dominate the scene as the strongest clue to identity.

When Bai Shijing attacks with his cleaved armor awl, the figure brushes aside his arm and reaches toward his throat. Bai Shijing anticipates another use of the technique and ducks beneath the figure’s arm. The figure does not follow up, instead remaining at the doorway. When Bai Shijing tries to strike at the figure’s leg, it jumps clear without bending its knees; Madam Ma responds by calling it a zombie. The unnatural-seeming movement reinforces the mistaken supernatural explanation already suggested by the family technique.

Exposure of the Murder Conspiracy

The figure’s pressure on Bai Shijing changes as he speaks: when he blames someone else, its fingers loosen, and when he falls silent, they tighten again. Convinced by Madam Ma’s identification of the figure as Ma Dayuan, Bai Shijing begs for mercy and discloses that Madam Ma had secretly read Chief Wang’s will and repeatedly urged Ma Dayuan to expose the secret of Qiao Feng’s birth. He says Ma Dayuan had refused, and begins to explain that Madam Ma therefore schemed against him.

The apparent haunting is in fact a deliberate performance by a martial arts expert, as Xiao Feng realizes. He does not believe in ghosts and understands that the figure is meant to panic Bai Shijing and Madam Ma into confessing. Bai Shijing’s disclosure confirms that he and Madam Ma killed Ma Dayuan, with Madam Ma as the chief schemer. Her motive, as revealed in the scene, was her desire to expose the secret of Qiao Feng’s birth, which Ma Dayuan had been unwilling to reveal.

Narrative Function

The technique joins physical action to the recovery of concealed history. Its distinctive family association gives the concealed figure a credible way to unsettle the guilty, while Bai Shijing’s recognition supplies the scene’s initial interpretive clue. The audience, like the characters, is first invited to read the figure through the language of haunting; Xiao Feng’s rational explanation then recasts the same signs as calculated intimidation.

The technique’s significance therefore extends beyond its use in combat. It makes Ma Dayuan’s presence seem possible, draws out the truth of his death, and connects that crime to the attempt to expose Qiao Feng’s origins. What begins as fear of a family martial art becomes a route into the human conspiracy behind the supposed supernatural return.
