Xiao Feng and Bai Shijing

Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils

Xiao Feng and Bai Shijing are linked by the Beggar Clan’s hierarchy and by the betrayal that turns a trusted elder into one of the central figures behind the attacks on Xiao Feng’s standing. Bai Shijing’s role becomes unmistakable at the Ma residence: he arrives while Xiao Feng and Duan Zhengchun are present, disables Duan Zhengchun, and is exposed as an accomplice of Madam Ma. The revelation connects his personal crime to the larger scheme that disclosed Xiao Feng’s Khitan origins and helped drive him from the life he had known.

Identity and Former Association

Bai Shijing is the Beggar Clan’s Law Enforcement Elder, a position that places him within the organization’s authority structure. Xiao Feng, previously the clan’s leader, has been forced away from that standing amid the controversy over his birth. Their relationship therefore carries an institutional contrast: Bai Shijing remains an elder of the clan, while Xiao Feng has become the target of revelations and accusations tied to the same organization.

The account of Bai Shijing’s entrance at the Ma residence makes Xiao Feng’s sense of betrayal explicit. Xiao Feng recognizes him as the Beggar Clan’s Law Enforcement Elder and understands that the person before him is not an unknown assailant but a figure closely connected to his former world. The arrival also resolves several suspicions: Madam Ma had possessed Xiao Feng’s fan, and she had seen through A'Zhu’s disguise as Bai Shijing. Xiao Feng’s reflections link those discoveries to someone close enough to have access to his belongings and affairs.

The Conspiracy and Its Exposure

Bai Shijing enters while Duan Zhengchun has Madam Ma under control and Xiao Feng has withdrawn his assistance. He immediately seizes Duan Zhengchun and renders him unable to resist, taking advantage of the short-lived support Xiao Feng had supplied. The action turns a tense confrontation into a crisis for Duan Zhengchun, while confronting Xiao Feng with the fact that Bai Shijing is willing to use force against a man whom Xiao Feng has reason to protect.

When Madam Ma protests that Duan Zhengchun has not lost his martial arts and has merely had an acupuncture point sealed, Bai Shijing’s conduct further exposes the danger. Xiao Feng is initially stunned by the reversal. He considers Bai Shijing’s actions cruel, yet recognizes that he must intervene for Duan Zhengchun’s sake; he also weighs the matter against A'Zhu’s connection to Duan Zhengchun. His response is divided between resentment at Bai Shijing and the obligation to preserve a life important to A'Zhu.

The confrontation eventually forces the conspiracy into the open. Under pressure, Bai Shijing blames Madam Ma and reveals that she had repeatedly urged Ma Dayuan to expose the secret of Xiao Feng’s birth. Ma Dayuan resisted, and Bai Shijing’s account identifies the pair as responsible for his death, with Madam Ma as the principal planner. The motive, as revealed in this exchange, was bound to the effort to uncover Xiao Feng’s origins and the conflict over Ma Dayuan’s refusal to disclose them.

Betrayal, Guilt, and Death

Bai Shijing’s disclosure does not absolve him. He attempts to shift responsibility to Madam Ma, but the circumstances establish that he was involved in the murder of Ma Dayuan. Xiao Feng understands the revelation as a causal link between the conspiracy and his own ordeal: the secret of his birth was not exposed simply by chance, but became the object of a deliberate struggle in which Ma Dayuan’s opposition led to his killing.

Bai Shijing is killed during the same confrontation. As an unseen figure impersonating Ma Dayuan’s ghost presses him for a confession, Bai Shijing’s fear deepens and he pleads for his former companion to spare him. The figure then fatally silences him. His death ends the immediate possibility of further questioning and leaves the confession as the decisive account of his part in the crime.

Significance of the Relationship

The relationship’s defining turn is the collapse of institutional trust. Bai Shijing’s office associates him with the Beggar Clan’s enforcement and order, but his secret participation in Ma Dayuan’s murder makes that authority part of the betrayal rather than a safeguard against it. For Xiao Feng, discovering Bai Shijing’s involvement helps explain how the campaign surrounding his birth reached into his private life and damaged his place among the clan.

The episode also separates responsibility from the attempt to assign blame. Bai Shijing names Madam Ma as the chief schemer, but his own actions and his confession establish his complicity. Their relationship is therefore not simply one of antagonist and victim: it is a broken bond within Xiao Feng’s former organization, exposed through a crime whose motive, consequences, and perpetrators converge in the same scene.
