Fiete Raped at the Shelter

Der goldene Handschuh

Fiete Raped at the Shelter is a remembered assault that gives a concrete origin to Fiete Honka’s later wish for revenge. After he found work on another farm following his attempted murder of Bauer Frerk, two women and a man abducted him to a homeless shelter, robbed him, and left him unconscious; when he came to, he had been stripped, bound, and raped.

Background and Abduction

The assault took place after Fiete had found work on a different farm in the wake of his attempted murder of Bauer Frerk. One evening, two women and a man seized him and took him to a homeless shelter. They took ten marks from him and forced him to drink vermouth—about half a bottle, perhaps three-quarters—until he lost consciousness. The episode was also his first experience of drinking alcohol.

Assault at the Shelter

When Fiete regained consciousness, the women had taken off his clothes and tied his hands behind his back with a stocking. They held him by the legs while the man raped him. The sequence of robbery, forced drinking, restraint, and rape leaves him without the ability to resist or control what is done to him.

Recollection and Consequence

The narrative returns to the assault while Fiete is absorbed in violent sexual fantasies and the handling of his pistol. In that later moment, the remembered rape is not presented as an isolated detail: Fiete wants revenge for it and for everything else he believes has been done to him. The recollection links an earlier experience of coercion to the retaliatory violence taking shape in his imagination, without making that connection an excuse for his subsequent conduct.
