The Neighboring Room

A Companion in the Mess
An established city life
Chunilal has lived for years in the room next to Devdas Mukherjee’s shared lodging. His long stay in Calcutta has not brought academic success: he has repeatedly failed to pass his degree examinations and remains in the lodging house rather than moving into a settled professional life.
The two young men occupy different positions in the same urban environment. Devdas is newly returned from his village and still imagines that learning might give his life direction; Chunilal has already drifted away from study and developed routines centered on the city’s nighttime diversions.
A confidant by proximity
When Devdas is troubled after sending Parvati Chakravarty a rejecting letter, Chunilal notices that he looks unwell and asks whether he is unhappy. Devdas’s questions about suffering and the places Chunilal visits turn proximity into an opening for confidence.
Chunilal does not know the full cause of Devdas’s distress, but he offers company and an invitation. His role begins as that of a worldly neighbor who can take Devdas somewhere beyond the narrow confines of his room.
An Invitation to Chitpore

A Door into Nightlife
Curiosity turns into a visit
Chunilal tells Devdas that his nights are spent in a place of entertainment and offers to take him there. Devdas agrees, believing that the visit may offer relief from his thoughts, but he misunderstands the practical nature of the excursion and prepares as if he were leaving Calcutta for good.
The moment marks an early shift in their companionship. Chunilal is the guide who carries Devdas into an unfamiliar social space, though he cannot know that Devdas will respond to it with disgust rather than pleasure.
A hostile first encounter
At Chandramukhi’s house in Chitpore, Devdas reacts with open contempt and presses money into her hand before abruptly leaving. Chunilal is left to explain that Devdas’s behavior may stem from private troubles, while Chandramukhi asks whether her guest might come again.
The encounter gives Chunilal a continuing link to Chandramukhi, but not control over Devdas. He can arrange introductions and keep promises to others; he cannot make Devdas feel at ease or choose how to respond to the people he meets.
A Friend at the Edge of Decline

Company without Rescue
Drinking enters the friendship
When Devdas’s distress deepens, Chunilal continues to share his nighttime world, and alcohol becomes part of the company available to Devdas. Their association gives Devdas access to a place where he can sit, drink, and avoid explaining his private pain.
That access is not the same as understanding. Chunilal does not know the full history of the rupture with Parvati, and Devdas himself offers little explanation. The friendship persists through shared habits and proximity rather than a frank account of what has gone wrong.
A companion who cannot intervene
Dharmadas later asks Chunilal to help send Devdas home, recognizing that the city is worsening the young man’s condition. Chunilal considers the appeal, but Devdas’s unpredictable behavior and refusal to speak leave his companions without a reliable way to help.
Chunilal’s presence therefore becomes part of an unresolved contradiction. He can provide company and a route into the nightlife that Devdas seeks, but he cannot persuade Devdas to turn that company into a path back to health or family.
The Rupture at Chandramukhi’s House

A Friend’s Absence
A failed arrangement
After Devdas has been away from Calcutta, Chunilal’s relationship with Chandramukhi deteriorates. She tells Devdas that Chunilal tried to bring her a wealthy patron and that she turned the arrangement away, after which the two fell out.
The disagreement reveals how differently the companions understand their obligations. Chunilal appears to have treated the proposal as a practical solution, while Chandramukhi has already reorganized her life around the decision not to return to her former work.
No message from Chunilal
When Devdas asks where Chunilal has gone, Chandramukhi says she does not know and that he has not returned. Devdas can no longer rely on the neighboring-room companion who once introduced him to her house.
The estrangement is brief in its narration but important in effect: as Devdas’s circle of support narrows, one of his most familiar urban companions becomes unavailable. The separation does not itself cause Devdas’s decline, but it leaves fewer everyday connections capable of noticing or interrupting it.
A Reunion in Lahore

An Old Companion Returns
Recognition in a new city
Chunilal is working in Lahore when he hears that Devdas has arrived. He goes to meet his old friend, renewing their association after a period in which they have been apart and Devdas has continued to travel in poor health.
The reunion offers Devdas familiarity away from his family and the people who might demand explanations. In Chunilal’s company, he tastes liquor again, returning to a habit that had become closely tied to his attempts to escape painful thoughts.
Companionship cannot reverse the pattern
The meeting does not become a rescue. Devdas remains physically unwell, with recurring stomach pain and fever, while his drinking and absences continue. Chunilal’s return gives him a companion, but not the stability or intervention that his condition requires.
When Devdas eventually leaves Lahore with Dharmadas, he says goodbye to Chunilal and returns toward Allahabad. Their friendship survives in intermittent reunions, yet it cannot overcome the isolation Devdas carries from one city to the next.
