Cloud Gap Ambush

Doctor Sleep

The Cloud Gap Ambush is the confrontation in which Dan Torrance and his allies intercept the True Knot’s team sent to abduct Abra Stone. A carefully prepared decoy and the defenders’ intervention turn the attackers’ expected capture into a failed assault, while the missing Crow leaves Dan with a new lead.

Approach and Identification

Dan waits beside the Cloud Gap access road, seated at a picnic table with a Glock concealed in a picnic basket. When a Winnebago pulls into the parking lot, its passengers emerge one after another. Abra had warned that the True Knot traveled in campers and Winnebagos and used pirate-like names, but the arriving group initially looks ordinary: older men and a younger woman. The setting gives Dan reason to hesitate; it is a New England tourist spot at the start of leaf-peeping season, and he hopes John Dalton and David Stone will not mistake innocent visitors for attackers.

That doubt ends when Dan sees a rattlesnake tattoo on the woman’s arm, syringes in the hands of two members of the group, and a strange, unusually thin pistol carried by the man leading them. The leader stops at the birch poles marking the picnic area and demands to know where the girl is. Dan points instead to Hoppy, Abra’s stuffed rabbit, making the decoy plain: the kidnappers have arrived, but the child they seek is not there.

The Ambush Begins

The man with the unusual pistol tries to make Dan fall asleep. The effect takes hold abruptly: Dan’s eyelids grow heavy and his grip begins to slacken. Abra’s scream breaks through the attack before he loses consciousness. Startled, Dan fires from the basket, but the shot goes wild; the sudden noise also shakes off the sleepiness.

Dave then emerges from the woods and fires at the group. Most of his shots miss, but one strikes Walnut, the True Knot’s doctor, and drops him. The attackers’ arrival has become an open confrontation, with Dan and Dave resisting the party that came expecting to take Abra without opposition.

Resistance and Reversal

The attackers’ apparent advantage lasts only moments. The man with the unusual pistol fires at Dan, but the weapon’s dart strikes Hoppy rather than its intended target. Dan returns fire from the wrecked picnic basket and brings down the man in the chinos. The decoy has absorbed the first shot, and the would-be kidnappers are no longer facing an unresisting target.

Snakebite Andi, the last of the group still standing, charges Dave Stone with a hypodermic needle. Dave appears unable to respond, so John Dalton rushes from the woods and drives him into her path. As they fall, the needle is dislodged; John then strikes Andi with the stock of Billy Freeman’s deer rifle, stopping her attack. His immediate distress at having hit her so hard contrasts with the group’s intended violence toward Abra and the confidence with which they had approached the picnic area.

Dan directs John’s attention to Walnut, who has been struck in the neck. Rather than simply remaining down, Walnut begins to cycle rapidly: his clothing and body seem to shrink inward and swell back, while the visible blood appears and disappears. The disturbance makes the True Knot’s unusual condition unmistakable to the defenders. By the time Abra’s panicked psychic message reaches Dan, two of the men who pursued her have vanished, leaving only their clothes; Snakebite Andi remains, badly hurt and still cycling.

The Missing Crow and the Aftermath

Snakebite Andi survives the first exchange long enough to speak with Dan, though her condition continues to change as she cycles. She accuses the defenders of defeating the True Knot through an unexpectedly organized resistance. Dan answers by identifying David Stone as Abra’s father, but Andi dismisses the personal connection: to her, he is simply another man. Her response exposes the distance between the ordinary family bond at stake and the group’s predatory view of its intended victim.

Dan asks where Crow Daddy is. Andi cries that he got off in Anniston, giving Dan a lead beyond the ambush site. Her answer also confirms that Crow Daddy was not among the attackers Dan and his allies intercepted. The revelation redirects attention from the immediate fight to the possibility that the missing member of the True Knot remains elsewhere.

Thinking of what the True Knot had done to Bradley Trevor, Dan feels an overwhelming urge to retaliate against Andi. Instead, he recalls a child who had reached for leftover soda, and recognizes that the memory does not make Andi comparable to the child or justify his anger. The fury gives way to sickness and emptiness. This inward turn matters amid the defenders’ use of force: Dan has won the immediate confrontation, but he does not treat victory as permission to abandon restraint.

Andi continues cycling until she disappears. Dan then walks carefully back to John Dalton and David, carrying Hoppy without realizing he has picked up the stuffed rabbit. His head is clearing, but the relief is mixed: the attackers have been stopped, while Crow Daddy’s absence and the information about Anniston leave the danger unresolved.

Resolution and Residual Threat

Snakebite Andi’s final words return to her contempt for men and for the ordinary people who have defeated the True Knot; then she disappears as her cycling ends. Dan walks back to John Dalton and David Stone slowly, steadying himself against the picnic tables. He is carrying Hoppy without having noticed he picked up the rabbit, a small, unplanned return to the decoy around which the ambush had turned. His head is clearing, but the scene closes on no uncomplicated relief: the immediate assault is over, while Dan’s precarious balance and Crow Daddy’s absence leave its consequences unsettled.
