Crow Kidnaps Abra and Billy Freeman
Doctor SleepCrow Daddy’s abduction of Abra Stone and Billy Freeman turns a failed search into a direct assault: Crow recognizes Abra, incapacitates her protector, and exploits the psychic shock of the Cloud Gap ambush to seize her at home. He succeeds in getting both captives into a pickup, but the scene ends before he can deliver Abra to Rose the Hat.
Identifying the target
Crow is watching Richland Court after taking Barry seriously enough to abandon the True Knot’s earlier course. Uncertain what to do next, he considers contacting Rose, but their last conversation had offered little useful guidance. His opportunity arrives when two girls emerge from a nearby house. He recognizes them from the computer photographs Billy had collected: Emma Deane and Abra Stone.
The girls’ different movements settle Crow’s uncertainty. Emma watches Abra go down the walk, then returns indoors. Abra crosses the street, where the man in the truck raises his hands in a questioning gesture. She answers with a thumbs-up, signaling that everything is all right. Crow reads the exchange as proof that Abra is the person the True Knot wants and that the old man in the truck is guarding her. The apparent reassurance is also a revealing mistake: it tells Crow exactly which girl to pursue.
Crow tries the speed dial for Snakebite Andi, but there is no cellular service in Cloud Gap. Rather than contact Rose, he switches off his phone and decides to act alone. His confidence is reinforced by the setting’s isolation and by his belief that taking an old man and a young girl should be manageable. He has four loaded syringes, two in each pocket, and approaches Billy with the practiced, trustworthy smile he uses when arranging lodging for the True Knot.
Billy is incapacitated
Crow presents himself to Billy as a lost stranger asking for directions. Billy is already nervous and on edge, but Crow’s cheerful manner wins a brief opening. As Billy reaches toward the open glove compartment, Crow injects the side of his neck. Billy thinks he has been bitten by a bug before he slumps sideways, unconscious.
Crow pushes Billy across the bench seat and takes the wheel. He looks around, but the quiet street gives no sign that anyone has noticed. When he starts the engine, the radio blares Toby Keith. At that moment a terrible white light briefly washes out Crow’s vision. Though his telepathic ability is limited, his connection to the True Knot lets him feel that a member of the group has died. The light returns twice more. Crow realizes that Cloud Gap was not merely a diversion: the True Knot has been ambushed, and the deaths have reached him through the bond that makes the group feel like one organism.
Rose’s intrusion and Crow’s attack
Elsewhere, Abra is in the familiar hallway between the front door and kitchen when Rose the Hat’s mental voice overwhelms her thoughts. The house and Anniston seem to fall away; Abra finds herself on the ground beneath the sky. She understands that the deaths at Cloud Gap have physically knocked Rose off her feet, and takes a moment of grim satisfaction in that reversal. But Rose’s assault has caught her unprepared. Abra struggles to defend herself, then summons more psychic force than she has ever used, pushing against the revolving world until her own front hall returns.
Crow is waiting in that mental space. Abra sees him in the kitchen doorway, recognizes the danger, and runs rather than attempting a psychic counterattack while still reeling from Rose’s intrusion. Crow catches her at the door as she reaches for the thumb lock, puts an arm around her throat, and pulls her back. Her first effort to push him away with her mind is confused and weak. He injects her just below the collarbone, but her arm knocks the syringe from his hand before he can administer the full dose. Even so, enough of the drug enters her to break her hold on his mind and leave her hands powerless. She remains conscious long enough to tell him that the monsters he calls friends are dead; her attempt to speak further is cut short.
The captives in the pickup
Crow enters the house through the rear door, forcing the spring lock with a credit card. He does not plan to leave by the same route: a high fence and a river lie beyond the sloping backyard, while his transportation is in the opposite direction. He carries Abra through the kitchen and into the garage, where he slides her limp body beneath a worktable holding her father’s tools. He opens the garage door and walks out wearing the same ingratiating smile he used on Billy.
Returning to the pickup, Crow moves Billy again, placing him in the middle of the bench seat. He drives the truck into the Stone driveway, then transfers Abra from the garage to the passenger side. He buckles both captives in. Although he considers killing Billy and leaving the body behind, he decides the old man might be useful, provided the drug has not killed him. Crow checks Billy’s pulse and finds it slow but strong; Abra is breathing, her breath fogging the window.
Crow’s purpose is to take Abra to Rose as a love offering. He celebrates having captured her despite her unusual strength and resistance, striking the dashboard in triumph. His exhilaration contrasts with the immediate peril: the True Knot has suffered lethal losses, Billy and Abra are unconscious or drugged, and Crow is carrying out his plan without having contacted Rose. The action closes with the captives secured in the pickup inside the garage, leaving their fate and Crow’s next move unresolved.
