Freeman
Doctor SleepFreeman, Iowa, is the setting of the abandoned Organic Industries Ethanol Plant #4, a remote-viewing image Abra Stone describes in detail and Dan Torrance and John Dalton later verify on the ground. Its broken buildings, fallen smokestacks, water tower, and outlying shed turn an uncertain psychic image into a physical place the men can reach.
The Town and the Plant
The location is identified through a warning sign for trespassers and the name of the ethanol plant, marked closed until further notice. Abra can distinguish the sign from the additional details she has perceived about the facility. Her description includes not only the plant but also its water tower and a shed, making the image specific enough to be checked against the landscape.
Verification at the Site
As Dan and John approach the Freeman town line, John wonders whether the plant might have been demolished since the satellite image he consulted, with the land returned to corn. Dan is confident that it will still be there. The site proves to match Abra’s account: soot-gray concrete blocks stand beneath rusty corrugated roofing; one smokestack remains upright, while two have fallen. The windows are smashed, graffiti marks the walls, and a potholed service road leads to a parking lot where stray corn has sprouted. Nearby, the water tower bears the name Freeman, and the shed Abra saw is present as well.
Narrative Significance
Freeman makes Abra’s far-seeing concrete and testable. Dan and John do not have to accept an impression on trust alone: the plant, tower, shed, and warning sign correspond to the details she supplied. The contrast between the site’s ordinary industrial remains and the extraordinary means by which Abra knows them gives the location its importance in their search. Its locked gate and no-trespassing warning also mark a boundary the men must confront as they move from confirmation toward investigation.
