REDRUM

Doctor Sleep

REDRUM is the word Dan Torrance sees written in blood on a mirror, a sign that the Overlook Hotel’s haunting has not ended even after he has locked away its ghosts. Its appearance turns his attention from the contained revenants to the continuing visions bound up with his shining.

Appearance and Context

Dan first notices writing on the mirror above the sink and tries not to look. When he turns, the word is REDRUM. A bloodstained Atlanta Braves T-shirt lies in the sink, making the image more than a word on glass: it is accompanied by an object that suggests a murdered child. Dan also sees a hatful of blood in the bathtub, further convincing him that the scene is not a dream.

Meaning for Dan

The word arrives after Dan has securely locked Mrs. Massey and Horace Derwent away in mental lockboxes. Their containment has not brought the Overlook Hotel’s influence to an end. Dan concludes that he cannot lock away the shining itself, because it is not merely something inside him but part of who he is. Without alcohol to stun it, he fears that the visions will continue until they drive him insane.

In the mirror, Dan sees his face with REDRUM apparently stamped across his forehead like a brand. The reflection makes the threat feel inseparable from his own identity: the word is both an external sign in the room and the focus of his fear that the shining will overwhelm him.

Response and Unresolved Effect

Dick Hallorann’s remembered advice offers Dan a way to resist the vision. Hallorann had told him that what he sees is like pictures in a book, that he was not helpless as a child at the Overlook Hotel and is not helpless now, and that he should close his eyes. Dan follows the instruction and waits, but the scene ends without confirming that REDRUM or the surrounding images disappear.
