Tampa

Doctor Sleep

Tampa is a setting in Dan Torrance’s childhood, where he and his mother, Wendy Torrance, lived after drifting south from the mid-South. The city anchors a period of unsettled domestic life and recovery after the family’s time at the Overlook Hotel, while visits from Dick Hallorann bring a trusted connection into their home.

Setting and Domestic Life

Wendy and Dan lived in a cramped second-floor tenement apartment. One night, Dan woke needing to use the bathroom as a strong Florida wind blew outside. Its sound unsettled him because it recalled the Overlook Hotel, where the defective boiler had been the least of the dangers. A dying palm beside the building clattered in the gusts, giving the ordinary apartment surroundings an association with the earlier ordeal.

The apartment’s broken bathroom lock shaped a small household routine: the door was usually left open when the room was not in use. On this night it was closed, though Wendy was asleep in her bedroom. She was still affected by injuries sustained at the Overlook, and Dan could hear her snoring from across the hall.

Family and Recovery

Tampa belonged to a longer period of movement: Wendy and Dan had lived in the mid-South before drifting down to Florida. Their life there was marked by the practical closeness of sharing a cramped home and by Wendy’s care for her son. On one day, she got him out of bed at noon and managed to get him to eat a little soup and half a peanut-butter sandwich; he then returned to bed and remained unwilling to speak. The episode presents their domestic routine alongside Dan’s withdrawal, without making the city itself the source of his distress.

Hallorann’s Visits

Dick Hallorann sometimes came up from Key West to visit Wendy and Dan, especially the boy, with whom he shared a bond. One visit followed a day when Dan would not speak: Hallorann arrived shortly after five in the afternoon in his old but meticulously maintained red Cadillac. Wendy had been waiting at the window. The visit connects Tampa not only to the Torrances’ private life but also to the continuing relationship between Hallorann and Dan.
