Token Charlie

Token Charlie is a True Knot member whose psychic contact helps Rose the Hat track Abra Stone. His brief success gives Rose a lead; later, strengthened by the others gathered in the Lodge, his usually weak sending becomes a clear channel for the group’s pursuit.

Identity and Introduction

Rose finds Token Charlie near her EarthCruiser, pacing after the True Knot has taken nearly all the steam stored in her canisters. She has also consumed steam herself over the preceding days and is too wired to sit still. Into this anxious, restless moment Charlie runs with news: he has made contact with Abra, if only for a few seconds.

His excitement is physical as well as psychic. He grabs Rose by the arms and whirls her around, sending her hair flying. The brief contact is enough to make him certain that he has reached the girl, and enough to give Rose reason to keep him listening.

Tracking Abra

Rose directs Charlie to find somewhere quiet, concentrate, and listen for Abra again. She asks him to report if he picks her up, because she does not want to lose track of her, and offers him some of the steam she has saved if he needs it. Charlie refuses the offer, laughs wildly, and rushes off, insisting that he will listen hard. Rose doubts he knows where he is going, but his continued effort matters more to her than his destination.

The encounter establishes Charlie as a psychic tracker rather than a fighter: his contribution is the ability to sense Abra and sustain contact. His initial success is fleeting, but Rose treats even a few seconds of connection as actionable information and makes renewed listening his immediate task.

The True Knot's Collective Sending

Later, Charlie contacts Rose again while she is trying to keep her mind closed against Abra. He reports that he is getting the girl steadily and strongly, and that the others are helping. Although he is ordinarily a feeble sender, the True Knot members gathered in the Lodge boost his signal until it comes through loud and clear, nearly frantic with excitement. Rose can feel Abra's presence as Charlie does.

Rose tells him to alert the others to be ready in case she needs help. Their responses overlap, and even members who are sick offer what assistance they can. Charlie's renewed contact thus shows both the practical value of his psychic ability and the way the True Knot can amplify it through their connection as a group. Rose's affection for their readiness sits alongside the pursuit itself: their linked strength is a resource she can draw upon, and Charlie is one of its conduits.
