Malvern

Down Cemetery Road

Malvern is the railway stop where Sarah Trafford is separated from Michael Downey and left to face the night alone. The town’s shadowed station and imposing hotel frame a sharp reversal: a stop arranged to keep the pair from being seen together becomes, for Sarah, an uncertain search for safety.

A stop on the escape route

Downey tells Sarah that they will get off at Malvern and meet outside, explaining that ticket collectors might notice them together. The instruction makes the stop part of their effort to avoid detection, but also separates them at a vulnerable point in their journey. Sarah waits until the train has pulled away before leaving the platform; by then, Downey is nowhere in sight.

Station and town

Sarah’s first impression of Malvern is of a neat, well-kept place made ominous by darkness. Station lights fall in tight pools among shifting shadows, while wind moves the fuchsias and ferns in hanging baskets. The ordinary details offer little comfort: the platform is dim, and sounds from beyond the shadows are difficult for her to identify. Her shoes clatter across the concourse, and outside she finds a car park and a hill to climb, with another hill in the distance. Far from home, short of money and lightly dressed, she has no settled refuge.

Shelter and exposure

The train’s departure makes Sarah feel that an escape route has closed. She accepts that Downey may have abandoned her, though she recognizes that he is a stranger who has already saved her life and owes her nothing. Grieving for Wigwam and afraid of being alone, she knows she needs shelter before her tears overwhelm her. An imposing stone hotel lies ahead: unlike the backstreet lodging she would have expected, it seems grand and reluctant to receive ordinary members of the public. Its scale and formality sharpen the contrast between the refuge Sarah needs and the precarious position in which she finds herself.
