Brad Demetri

Dr. Death

Brad Demetri is a detective working with Steve Korn on the Eldon Mate murder investigation. He appears in two consequential moments: challenging the theory that Roy Haiselden was involved, and accompanying Steve Korn when police take Richard Doss to the station for questioning. Demetri’s skeptical reasoning and terse manner distinguish him within the investigation, even though the available scenes reveal little about his life beyond police work.

Introduction and Presence

Demetri and Steve Korn approach Milo Sturgis at his desk after Milo has been discussing the case with Petra Connor. They stop in front of the desk without offering their hands, their stiff greeting making the encounter feel less like a routine exchange than a barrier between colleagues. Demetri’s glasses sit slightly askew, and his bald head is sunburned and peeling. When Milo asks what is wrong, Demetri answers in a notably low voice, described as sounding electronically manipulated; he makes the lack of progress itself the problem.

His physical details and reserved manner establish a detective who is not easily drawn into easy camaraderie. He removes his glasses and wipes them on his sport coat while Steve Korn toys with his collar, small gestures that accompany their discomfort at Milo’s encouragement.

Investigative Judgment

Milo urges the detectives to keep pursuing Haiselden, pointing to evidence that Haiselden had left his mail stop. Demetri does not accept that disappearance as proof of a connection to Mate’s murder. After exchanging a glance with Steve Korn, he says they have discussed the possibility and are not convinced Haiselden has anything to do with the case.

His objection is practical: there is no evidence pointing toward Haiselden, and the proposed motive does not make sense to him. Haiselden had made money from Mate, so Demetri asks why he would kill the person who provided that income. He favors the possibility that Haiselden went on vacation and became depressed after losing that source of money. This remains a working interpretation, not a resolution; the scene shows Demetri resisting an investigative assumption because the available evidence and the proposed motive do not align.

Taking Richard Doss to the Station

Later, Demetri tells Richard Doss to accompany the detectives. Richard asks to call his lawyer first, but Steve Korn clarifies that Richard is not under arrest and can make the call from the station. Demetri’s role is direct and procedural: he is among the officers taking Richard in for questioning, not announcing an arrest.

As the family watches, Stacy Doss calls out to her father, but Richard does not answer her. Demetri leads the exchange away from the emotional scene, and Richard asks whether his surname indicates Greek ancestry. Demetri responds that he is American, then adds that his family was Lithuanian a long time ago; the narration notes that he answers too quickly. His brief reply offers a glimpse of personal background while preserving the clipped, guarded quality of his presence. After the detectives depart with Richard, Stacy begins to cry and Eric Doss holds her, marking the family cost of the police questioning without suggesting that Demetri himself knows or controls what the investigation will establish.
